Avian Care Supervisor

Save Our Seabirds – Sarasota, FL

Save Our Seabirds is seeking an Avian Care Supervisor to join our leadership team. This position ensures the highest standards of care, training, and enrichment for our resident ambassador birds—those who inspire the public and strengthen our educational mission.

While SOS is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating wild birds for release, this role specifically focuses on the resident ambassador bird program. It involves leading the keeper team and working closely with Education and Hospital staff to ensure consistent, high-quality care and impactful conservation outreach.

Key Responsibilities

· Lead and coach the avian keeper team, with a strong emphasis on excellence in daily husbandry, including maintaining clean, healthy habitats.

· Maintain training records, develop training plans, and advance the skills of staff and volunteers.

· Collaborate with leadership to design and deliver engaging educational programming featuring resident birds.

· Maintain accurate records and serve as the primary link between the keeper team and management.

· Fill in alongside keepers as needed, including cleaning habitats, preparing diets, and assisting with daily animal care.

Minimum Qualifications:

· Bachelor's degree in animal science, biology, zoology, or related field; or equivalent experience.

· Minimum 3 years of professional experience in avian husbandry, handling, and behavioral training.

· Minimum 3 years of team leadership or supervisory experience within an animal care or zoological setting.

· Proven experience developing and implementing training protocols using positive reinforcement.

· Strong communication skills for collaboration with veterinary, education, and operations teams.

· Working knowledge of regulatory standards (e.g., FWC, USDA, best practices).

· Reliable transportation.

· Ability to work with cleaning chemicals.

· Ability to work in the elements – rain, wind, humidity, heat, cold, etc.

· Ability to lift 40 lbs.

· Flexibility and willingness to work weekends and holidays as needed.

Job Types: Full-time

Expected hours: 40 per week

Pay: $45,000+ DOE
