Job Description
This position within World Council of Credit Unions' (WOCCU) Advocacy Department focuses on advocating on behalf of the global credit union movement regarding international financial regulatory standards that affect credit unions and other depository institutions.
The position supports WOCCU's proactive and responsive strategy. The proactive strategy focuses on thought leadership, including the drafting of white papers and position statements on behalf of the credit union movement. The responsive strategy focuses on responding to consultation proposals issued by policymakers and global standard setting bodies.
Given the advocacy strategy, this position requires an understanding of financial regulatory policymaking by international organizations such as the G20, the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, the Financial Stability Board, the Financial Action Task Force, and European Union institutions, as well as general knowledge of the legislative and regulatory process. It also requires an interest in research and writing on policy issues affecting credit unions that may be novel or still developing.
This position will be expected to develop subject matter expertise on advocacy issues relevant to credit unions, make well-reasoned judgments, and foresee possible outcomes. This position further requires the ability to communicate, through written and oral communications, these policies' implications for credit unions to a broad audience in an informative and easily understood manner.
Required Experience
It is essential that the individual holding this position have strong writing, research and analysis skills, be a self-starter as well as a team player, be able to handle several issues concurrently, demonstrate flexibility and work well within a dynamic organization, including working with other departments at WOCCU.
This position requires an advanced degree - a Master's, Ph.D. or Juris Doctor degree, fluency in English, and a minimum of two to five years of experience in financial services, international policy making or similar areas. Fluency in Spanish is also preferred.
Primary Responsibilities
- Advocacy & Representation:
- Within two years of employment, be able to act as a representative of WOCCU before international organizations and national governments, including attending consultative meetings.
- Support Advocacy-related research on priority topics as assigned.
- Contribute to responses to inquiries made by WOCCU members on policy or regulatory issues.
- Contribute to the research and writing of comment letters, consultation responses, white papers, position papers and other written documents related to financial policy issues, as well as summaries of proposed and final regulatory standards.
- Work with the VP for Advocacy and International Advocacy and Regulatory Counsel to reach strategic goals of the department and WOCCU generally.
- Contribute to the coordination of major events, conferences, and meetings organized by WOCCU and the European Network of Credit Unions.
- Monitor relevant legal and policy developments.
- Assist WOCCU members as needed with national-level implementation of international standards.
- Interact with staff, board members, external parties such as World Council member organizations and financial policymakers with courtesy and discretion.
- Lead special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
- Public Relations:
- Write and edit Advocacy communications including newsletters and blog posts.
- Assist in the development of Advocacy website content.
- Support and manage a clearinghouse of information about key/ strategic issues for member countries.
- Prepare reports to fulfill WOCCU's member reporting needs.

Remote but must reside in Iowa, New York, Texas, Washington DC or Wisconsin

EDUCATION
Master's, Ph.D. or JD preferred.
LANGUAGES
Proficiency in English; second language preferred (Spanish in particular).
TRAVEL
Up to 25 days per year including both domestic and international travel.

Disability and Life Insurance
Short-term Disability (STD)
–Offersincome replacement of 60% up to $1,500 per week for a maximum benefit period of 9 weeks. This benefit will begin after 0 days if you become disabled due to injury and after 7 days if you become disabled due to an illness.
Long-term Disability (LTD)
–Offers income replacement of 60% up to $10,000 per month.
Group Life and AD&D Insurance
– WOCCU provides a replacement for loss of income in the event of an employee's untimely death in the amount of two times the employee's salary up to a maximum of $350,000.
Voluntary Life and AD&D Insurance
–WOCCU employees can elect additional life and AD&D insurance plans based on their family's needs.
Voluntary Supplemental Benefits
– WOCCU employees can elect supplemental benefits protections for hospital confinement, accident, cancer, critical illness, and additional term or whole life insurance.
Paid Time Off
Sick Leave
– Eligible employees will accrue sick leave benefits at the rate of 12 days per year (1 day for every full month of service). Part-time employees accrue sick leave at a prorated rate.
Vacation Leave
– Vacation time begins at the commencement of employment and accrues in proportional increments per pay period throughout the calendar year. Vacation accrual is based on years of service. The initial accrual will be up to15 days based on hire date.
Paid Holidays
– WOCCU offers 11 paid holidays and 1 floating holiday that can be used at the employee's discretion.
Other Benefits
401K
– WOCCU offers a 401K retirement plan that allows pretax contributions up to the annual maximum contribution set by the IRS into your investment funds. WOCCU employees are required to contribute a minimum of 4% of their salary, and WOCCU will match at 100% up to 4% of salary.
Flexible Work Arrangement Subsidy
–WOCCU also offers a $25 monthly subsidy for Wi-Fi.
Tuition Reimbursement
– Provided the coursework enhances job performance, WOCCU may reimburse employees up to 75% of the annual tuition and related fees incurred during a calendar year, up to a maximum of $5,250 in reimbursed funds per year. Part-time employees would be eligible for tuition reimbursement on a prorated basis.
