Regional Sector Leader – Water Treatment, US South

The Regional Sector Leader (RSL) is an integral role within our Water regional leadership team, directing our work with technical rigor, an innovative spirit, and a vision for solving the world's greatest water challenges. In this leadership role, you can apply your passion for technical excellence and innovation, lead and develop top talent, and lend your voice to our collaborative leadership culture that empowers our people to redefine what's possible. 

Regional Sector Leaders leverage their knowledge of industry drivers and trends to strategically grow our technical capabilities and differentiate Stantec among our peers. The Regional Sector Leader also supports business development and growth by engaging directly with key clients in their geography and beyond, creating technical differentiators for our pursuits, and establishing a strong industry brand and presence. The Regional Sector Leader is responsible for elevating Stantec's brand and thought leadership in the industry by participating in marque professional conferences, publishing technical papers, conducting webinars and/or podcasts, expanding and growing Stantec's capacity to win and deliver drinking water work in our US South region (spanning from Texas to Missouri across Kentucky to the Carolinas down to Florida and Puerto Rico and back across to Texas).

Reporting directly to the North America Water Treatment Sector Leader, you will play a pivotal role in translating our broader North American strategy into actionable initiatives for the US South geography, closely collaborating to align resources, technical capabilities, and business growth objectives.

Primary Focus Areas

  • Strategy and Brand – Maintain knowledge of sector-related industry drivers and trends, regulations, and technologies across North America and globally. Use this knowledge to (1) identify and prioritize opportunities to support our clients with emerging challenges; (2) strategically grow our technical capabilities and people resources to meet client needs; and (3) foster a strong industry brand that differentiates Stantec among our peers. Implement branding strategies to promote Stantec and the sector in the industry; take on leadership roles in national and international professional trade organizations; and manage effective conference participation within the sector to maximize Stantec's brand presence. 
  • Delivering Excellence – Recruit and retain a distributed team of exceptional sector professionals, across all career levels and geographies. Connect sector practitioners with project managers and delivery experts across applicable disciplines to plan and deliver high quality, innovative solutions. Work with Delivery leaders and Water's Innovation Leader to support the development of digital delivery tools, innovative approaches, and new technologies.
  • Positioning and Pursuit – Collaborate with regional growth leaders and account managers to (1) develop relationships with key clients and increase client awareness of our capabilities, (2) connect internal subject matter experts and project technical leads to strategic pursuits, and develop winning technical approaches, and (3) identify new project opportunities related to priority sector growth areas.

Your Key Responsibilities

Coordinating with the US South Regional Growth Leader, you will be responsible for:

  • Identifying and supporting the win of strategic pursuits in collaboration with local Business Center Practice Leaders, Account Managers, and business developers,
  • Acting as a Liaison between local / regional teams and the North American Sector Leader and practice community to leverage both their and the sector's technical skills locally,
  • Reinforcing our brand as a leader in water treatment through active participation in industry organizations, thought leadership, and communication with strategic clients, and
  • Providing leadership to our water treatment professionals.

You will be expected to:

  • Regularly engage with clients.
  • Actively participate in industry associations
  • Leverage your understanding of the industry drivers, market trends, and legislative requirements in the US South to support and grow our water treatment portfolio.
  • Identify how technology changes affect our clients and our business.
  • Collaborate across the region to share knowledge and resources.
  • Contribute to our North America Water Treatment Team to implement our strategy across the continent and bring services and specialists from the broader Stantec organization to our clients.
  • Help recruit, retain, and inspire a team of water treatment professionals, at multiple levels, with exceptional technical skills.
  • Engage in delivery of water projects as a subject matter expert, leveraging your expertise, industry best practices, and new or innovative technologies.
  • Work closely with sector leaders, practice leaders, regional growth teams, project developers, and the Stantec Institute for Water Technology and Policy to leverage internal resources and match them up with projects and pursuits where they can bring value.
  • Consistently demonstrate a commitment to the Health and Safety culture within Stantec.

Key Performance Indicators 

The Regional Sector Leader will develop and implement an annual Regional Sector Plan that aligns with the Sector Plan and the Regional Business Plan.  The plan will identify key market opportunities, priorities, and strategies to keep Stantec at the leading edge of the industry. Key performance indicators will include metrics specific to the Regional Sector Plan, as well as those applicable to all leaders. 

  • Engagement in Top 20 Regional strategic pursuit opportunities 
  • Collaboration with other Regional Sector Leader counterparts 
  • Conduct at least three client or industry touch points per month, coordinated with regional leadership and account managers.
  • Active participation/leadership in one or more industry/trade organizations and/or professional associations.
  • People leader goals, including the following:
    • Help to maintain sector team capacity by partnering with regional/delivery teams on strategic recruiting/hiring, including use of personal professional network to attract talent.
    • Staff development and succession planning.
    • Regular participation in Stantec ERG (employee resource groups), DPG (developing professional groups), or similar participation.
  • Deliver blogs, seminars, webinars, workshops, articles and trade publications, developed personally or through the sector team, to advance Stantec's brand, in coordination with Water's PR and communications team.
  • HSSE goals and targets for leaders

Reporting and Utilization

The Regional Sector Leader reports to the Sector Leader (SL) and regularly collaborates with our subject matter experts, project delivery specialists, Regional Growth Leaders (RGLs), Delivery Center and Engineering Discipline Leads, Delivery Lead and Regional Delivery Leaders (DL/RDL), Business Center Practice Leaders (BCPLs) and account managers to grow the capability and capacity of their sector across the Region.

Utilization target ranges from 50% to 70%. You can be based out of any of our offices in the South, preferred in:

While we offer a hybrid working environment, in this leadership role you should expect to be in the office or with clients a minimum of three days per week.

Key qualifications and experience:

  • Ability to lead and inspire teams with a strong commitment to meeting goals and upholding Stantec's values and policies.
  • Experienced and visible industry leader in delivering complex stormwater treatment projects who is knowledgeable of sector technical strategies.
  • High degree of technical proficiency
  • Thinks strategically about the technologies, regulations, range of market, business and/or economic issues likely to impact the sector. Uses this information to develop strategies for sector development and growth.
  • Champions innovative ideas and initiatives and creates an environment that supports innovation. Leads the implementation of emerging technologies with a focus on potential challenges and appropriate courses of action.
  • Located in the US South, with ability to travel throughout North America.
  • Minimum bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering, or a related field, from an accredited institution. Master's or PhD degree, preferred.
  • Professional Licensure or willing to obtain licensure within one year.
  • Minimum of twelve (12) years of related work experience including design, engineering, leadership, and business development experience preferred
