Job Summary
The Custodial Substitute replaces a contract elementary head custodian or secondary school custodial staff members when the contract staff is on leave. This involves taking over regular custodial duties and responsibilities including keeping school premises in a clean and orderly condition through performing various custodial duties. The position may be assigned to work up to sixteen (16) hours during the district's winter break. The specific hours and locations worked are coordinated by the district administration to ensure coverage of all district buildings throughout the break.
Essential Functions
- Performs general clean-up of all facilities. sweeps, mops, scrubs, polishes, vacuums, extracts carpet, cleans halls, offices, classrooms, restrooms, remove trash from interior and exterior of the campus and school building, walls, lunchroom, gymnasium, auditorium, etc.
- Maintains gymnasium floors, stages, exercise rooms, lunchrooms.
- Waxes, seals, and occasionally refinishes various floor-types in the building.
- Works with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) regulated material and under Hazard Communication guidelines. May be exposed to biohazard waste during clean-up involving human blood, vomit and or other human bodily fluids.
- Prepares and sets up rooms for special meetings, parties, or various other activities and cleans up afterwards, which involves arranging seating, furniture, lights, sound, activities, and functions.
- Maintains school grounds. (Removes snow, ice and debris, cuts, trims trees and shrubs, weeds, mows, rakes, waters, sweeps sidewalks and playgrounds).
- Is responsibile for running the irrigation system and changing irrigation sprinkler heads when they are damaged or quit working.
- Performs periodic major cleaning projects such as scrubbing walls, ceilings, and woodwork and painting rooms.
- Secures building, locks and unlocks doors, turns off light switches, checks all rooms for closed and locked windows and doors then arms alarm before leaving the building at the end of the day.
- Must reset safeties on boilers, chillers, air handlers, and some small electrical breakers in case of trips and failures.
- Responsible for proper use of materials and equipment and the assigned area of the building with respect to cleanliness and is held accountable for performance in these areas.
- Responds to requests from Principal, secretaries, and teachers.

Required Knowledge and Skills
- Skill in the use of general maintenance hand tools, gardening tools, and small and large power tools.
- Skill in the use and maintenance of cleaning equipment including, but not limited to, vacuums, floor polisher, ride-on floor cleaning machines.
- Skill in the use and maintenance of gas-powered equipment, e.g.snowplow, snow thrower, lawn mower, etc.
- Skill in the proper use and setup of ladders, scaffolding, and operate powered man-lifts to work at heights.
- Knowledge of mechanical systems, e.g. boiler plant, air conditioning, ventilation and exhaust systems, and lighting control systems.
- General knowledge of sprinkling systems, fire alarm systems, and security systems.
- Skill in the use of cleaning solvents and their proper application.
- Knowledge of bloodborne pathogens and cleaning procedures.
- Basic communication, reading, and math skills.
Required Education and Qualifications
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
Required Prior Experience
- Requires one of the following:
- a minimum of one (1) year of full-time successful experience working as a Journeyman Custodian; or
- a minimum of two (2) years of full-time successful custodial experience.
Assigned Decision Making
- Responsible for reporting security problems, recurring HVAC problems, and equipment break downs to the proper departments.
- Makes decisions concerning the best way to accomplish tasks assigned.
- Makes suggestions but must be willing to follow directions.

- Interacts, collaborates, and works positively with other students, other employees, maintenance workers, school administrators, and school secretaries.
- Creates and supports a team-based environment.
Supervisory Responsibility
- May be required to supervise and provide assistance to hourly custodial helpers.
Working Environment
- Work takes place both inside and outside in all types of weather conditions, including snow and ice, extreme heat and cold, rain, and wind.
- Discomfort and hazards exist using tools and power equipment, ladders, scaffolds, mopping and using buffers on wet floor, and when working with chemicals.
- Frequent exposure to implement weather.
- Primary tasks must be completed with frequent interruptions.
- May respond to emergencies after hours when appropriate.
