Job Overview
The Crane Shop Operations Technician supports Bigge's McHard Shop by assembling and disassembling cranes, assisting shop operations, and working alongside the wire rope inspection team. This position plays a key role in maintaining, inspecting, and keeping crane components ready for deployment.
This is a shop-based position; no travel is required. The ideal candidate is a hands-on, safety-minded team player with strong mechanical skills and a commitment to quality workmanship.
Responsibilities
- Crane Assembly & Disassembly
- Assemble and disassemble a wide variety of lattice boom crawlers, telecrawlers, and RT cranes according to manufacturer specifications.
- Inspect and document the condition of components before and after assembly or disassembly.
- Ensure correct rigging, lifting, and positioning techniques are used.
- Troubleshoot and assist with basic mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic issues.
- Coordinate with shop and yard personnel and supervisors to ensure smooth crane movements and staging.Shop & Yard Support
- Assist shop mechanics with mechanical tasks, preventive maintenance, and equipment repairs.
- Maintain an organized yard and assist with staging tools, components, and materials.
- Perform general housekeeping, tool management, and equipment upkeep.Wire Rope Inspection Support
- Support the wire rope inspection team with rope handling and preparation for inspection.
- Act as a key player in the setup and teardown of cranes and equipment used during wire rope inspections, ensuring all tools, lifting gear, and components are properly staged, secured, and returned to their designated areas after use.
- Follow inspection and documentation procedures in line with Bigge standards.
- Assist with maintaining compliance and organization of inspection equipment.Safety & Communication
- Follow all OSHA, manufacturer, and Bigge safety standards and procedures.
- Participate in Job Hazard Analyses, safety meetings, and PPE inspections.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members to coordinate work priorities.
Requirements
- Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and crane assembly procedures.
- Working understanding of LHE (Load Handling Equipment), rigging, and load handling.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, drawings, and assembly instructions.
- Mechanical aptitude and experience in troubleshooting equipment.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physical labor safely.
Preferred experience with cranes or heavy equipment such as:
- Liebherr: LR 1160–LR 11000
- Link-Belt: LS 238, LS 248
- Terex/American: HC 165, HC 275
- Manitowoc: 11000, 999, 2250, 16000, MLC 650
- Kobelco: CK 1100G–CK 2750G
- Prior experience in a crane yard, equipment assembly, or industrial environment.
