Nuclear Engineer Radiation Transport Analyst

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Nuclear Engineer - Radiation Transport Analyst to join our Used Fuel Management team. Based out of our Research and Education Campus in Idaho Falls, Idaho, this role follows a 9x80 schedule, giving you every other Friday off. The department focuses on developing technologies for the safe handling, packaging, storage, transport, and disposal of the nation's spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste.
As a Nuclear Engineer - Radiation Transport Analyst, you will apply radiation transport principles to evaluate, characterize, and model nuclear designs, experimentation, and waste management. You will report to the Used Fuel Management Department Manager and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, following direction from mentors and team members. Responsibilities include computer modeling, report preparation, technical checks, presentations, and hands-on lab work. Projects include the Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment Advanced Reactor Demonstration Project.
You will gain extensive experience in spent fuel facilities, technologies, and management systems, and have opportunities to publish work and submit proposals.
Responsibilities Include:
- Apply nuclear engineering principles to design, develop, test, and analyze nuclear equipment and systems.
- Conduct research on new materials for radiation detection, nuclear fuels, and reactors.
- Perform studies on radiation detection, control of radioactive contaminants, and the nuclear fuel cycle, including economic uses and waste disposal.
- Address challenges related to safeguards and verification of fuel cycle nonproliferation measures.
- This position is part of the INL Nuclear Nexus.
- Develop experimental requirements or packaging and handling requirements for spent nuclear fuel.
- Apply advanced nuclear engineering design principles, theories, and concepts.
- Use best practices in design methodologies to develop and validate designs.
- Document designs to ensure conformance with requirements and standards.
- Establish testing, inspection, and quality requirements.
- Ensure fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement align with design specifications.
- Perform integrated analyses to meet experimental, storage, transportation, disposal, and facility safety requirements.
- Defend analytical methods and results in reviews.
- Support project/program interactions with sponsors, operations, and engineering organizations.
- Develop and improve physics-based mathematical models and analysis methods.
- Prepare reports and peer-reviewed publications.
- Represent programs through technical presentations and at conferences.
- Participate in professional development activities.
- Perform analyses of irradiation experiments and conduct research supporting nuclear processes.
- Support transformational fuel qualification efforts.
Minimum Requirements:
- Level 1: Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering or directly related engineering field from an ABET - accredited institution.
- Level 2: Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering or directly related engineering field from and ABET - accredited institution and 2 years of related experience. Masters of Science in Nuclear Engineering or directly related engineering field from and ABET - accredited institution and 0 years of experience. PhD in Nuclear Engineering or directly related engineering field from and ABET - accredited institution and 0 years of experience.
- Relevant Experience commensurate with the level.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
Preferred Experience:
- Advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering or a directly related engineering field from an ABET-accredited institution.
- Experience in nuclear fuels and materials, reactor physics and analysis tools/methods.
- Experience with the MCNP and SCALE code systems
- This role requires strong technical skills in nuclear engineering, including design, analysis, and problem-solving.
- Effective communication, the ability to mentor junior staff, and familiarity with applicable safety requirements are also essential.
Job Information:
The pay range for this position is: Level 1 ($65, 064 - $133,416) / Level 2 ($77,628 - $159,228). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel,
bend and work in an office and laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type,
handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment
and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and
