Job SummaryProvide basic fabrication or characterization process and/or equipment engineering services within an academic or research unit. This position will interact on a regular basis with: faculty, staff, students, researchers, vendors and contractors. This position typically will advise and counsel: faculty, staff, students, researchers, vendors and contractors.

ResponsibilitiesJob Duty 1 - Perform basic design and installation of laboratory equipment and processes.
The basic Fabrication stage involves running baseline introductory recipes for structures and films essential for various applications. This includes thin film deposition processes, where material layers are applied to a substrate to create specific properties; optical photolithography, which involves using light to transfer patterns onto a surface; and basic wet chemical etching, a method that removes material to shape features on a substrate. These processes provide the groundwork for further fabrication techniques and ensure a solid understanding of fundamental principles.
Job Duty 2 - Review and provide input to engineering plans and specifications for laboratory equipment or processes.
Job Duty 3 - Perform basic troubleshooting associated with laboratory equipment or processes; may involve calibration and repair work.
Job Duty 4 - Prepare drawings, schematic diagrams and related documentation associated with laboratory equipment or processes.
Job Duty 5 - Monitor expenses incurred; prepare related reports.
Job Duty 6 - Interact with vendors regarding procurement and delivery issues.
Job Duty 7 - Perform other duties as assigned
Educational Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience

The Institute for Matter and Systems (IMS) is seeking a Process-Equipment Engineer I to support instructional and research activities in IMS cleanrooms and affiliated research laboratories. This position involves leading hands-on lab sessions for various College of Engineering courses, maintaining laboratory operations, and supporting research initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver clear, thorough instruction on lab safety, protocols, and experimental procedures to students.
- Supervise students and teaching assistants during lab activities to ensure compliance with safety and procedural standards.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized laboratory environment.
- Monitor and perform routine maintenance on lab equipment to ensure functionality and longevity.
- Assist in developing and implementing lab policies and operational procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of lab usage, incidents, and equipment status.
- Report regularly to the IMS lab supervisor and maintain open communication on lab-related matters.
- Support general research lab activities as needed.
- Experience:
- 2+ Years of academic cleanroom and laboratory environment experience
- Background in chemical safety and equipment operation.
- Familiarity with lab maintenance and safety protocols.
- Proficiency in lab procedures and safety practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Competency in computer applications, including basic PC operations and data management.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience with microfabrication processes such as thermal oxidation, photolithography, thin film deposition, etching, metallization, and metrology.
- Basic understanding of microelectronic circuits (diodes, transistors, CMOS, logic circuits).
- Prior experience as a teaching assistant or lab instructor.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
SKILLS
This job requires professional level knowledge and skills in the application of fabrication processes and equipment engineering principles, processes and practices. Skills in application of regulations, codes and safety practices associated with research laboratory conditions, as is the use of office and engineering/technical related computer applications, databases and systems.
