Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Housing Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in assisting individuals and families in securing stable housing. This position requires a strong understanding of housing regulations, negotiation skills, and the ability to provide crisis intervention. The Housing Specialist will work closely with clients to navigate various housing programs, including Section 8, while ensuring compliance with Fair Housing regulations. You'll manage a caseload of up to 20 clients.

Duties

  • Conduct assessments to determine client needs and eligibility for housing assistance programs.
  • Manage and provide support to a caseload of at least 20 clients.
  • Assist clients in locating suitable housing options, including negotiating lease terms with landlords.
  • Travel within assigned counties in New Jersey
  • Provide guidance on landlord-tenant laws and rights, ensuring clients are informed of their responsibilities.
  • Facilitate crisis intervention and management for clients facing housing instability or emergencies.
  • Maintain detailed records of client interactions and progress using HMIS.
  • Collaborate with social workers and addiction counselors to support clients facing additional challenges.
  • Educate clients about available resources, including LIHTC (Low-Income Housing Tax Credit) properties and other affordable housing options.
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and supervision sessions as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Services, or a related field preferred; relevant experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Knowledge of Fair Housing regulations and landlord-tenant law is essential.
  • Experience in property management or working with housing assistance programs such as Section 8 is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in motivational interviewing techniques to empower clients effectively.
  • Must have a valid NJ driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Compassionate, organized, and client-focused approach to work.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to build rapport with diverse populations.
