PART-TIME LPN-JUVENILE SERVICE CENTER

Purpose of Job

The purpose of this classification is to provide basic patient care or treatments as well as certain administrative duties to detainees at the Knox County Juvenile Detention Facility, primarily on weekends and/or holidays.

Essential Functions

The Part-Time LPN is responsible for the following essential functions:

  • Prepare detainees for medical treatments under direct supervision of public health nurse.

  • Take and record vital signs such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, oxygen, etc. along with exam room prep.

  • Collect health information and accurately document in electronic health record system.

  • Administer intramuscular or subcutaneous injections, as directed.

  • Issue medications prescribed by provider or based on facility protocols.

  • Observe patients and report adverse reactions to medical personnel in charge.

  • Perform basic first aid and wound care for patients

  • Sterilize equipment and supplies.

  • Maintains knowledge of legal limitations while performing job functions.

  • Attends in-service training annually; attends CPR training and maintains certification biannually; attends regular staff meetings.

Additional Job Functions

  • Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local, regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor's Office

  • Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours

  • Perform other duties as required

Minimum Training & Qualifications

  • Vocational/Technical school certification in nursing required.

  • Minimum of one (1) year related experience in nursing or related field.

  • Must possess and maintain active LPN license with TN Board of Nursing.

  • Must be able to maintain a professional demeanor in a high-stress environment, at times, while dealing with detainees and their families.

  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays and on-call, at times.

  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered for employment into the position.

Specialized Knowledge

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Competencies

  • Ability to work in a position of moderate complexity

  • Basic understanding of PCs, tablets, smartphones and other electronic devices

  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Office suite of products

  • Ability to focus and demonstrate attention to detail

  • Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Experience with wound care

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires the ability to engage in frequent, moderate physical activity.
