The Instructional Designer is responsible for supporting and promoting quality course design practices across all instructional methods at the College, primarily focusing on online course development. The position also supports the Office of Educational Technology and Instructional Design and Academic Affairs departments on various special projects related to distance education, accessibility, universal design for learning, assessment, and open education resources.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Course Development

  • Advocate for quality course design and pedagogical best practices across all instructional methods at the College.
  • Collaborate with curriculum committees and faculty subject matter experts to design and develop single version courses that align with approved learning objectives.
  • Utilize instructional design methodologies and best practices to assist in the creation of interactive and engaging course content, including multimedia elements, assessments, and activities.
  • Ensure that the course design processes follow digital accessibility standards and guidelines to ensure inclusivity for all learners.
  • Create and maintain processes and procedures to ensure the quality of course design using established evaluation criteria and rubrics from organizations like Quality Matters and the Online Learning Consortium.

Instructional Design Support

  • Provide guidance and support to course developers on instructional design principles, strategies, and technologies to enhance the effectiveness of courses in all modalities offered by the College.
  • Assist faculty course developers in the selection and integration of appropriate educational technologies and tools to enhance student engagement and facilitate active learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with faculty course developers to identify opportunities for integrating innovative instructional approaches, such as gamification, simulations, or collaborative learning activities into course development projects.
  • Assist in the creation, implementation, and maintenance of faculty professional development and training in areas such as curriculum mapping, course development, digital accessibility, and other topics related to instructional design.

Continuous Improvement

  • Collaborate with IvyOnline, curriculum committees, and faculty to review and evaluate existing online courses to identify areas for improvement and implement necessary updates.
  • Collaborate with faculty and subject matter experts to ensure the accuracy and currency of course content, aligning it with industry trends where appropriate.
  • Stay updated on emerging trends, research, and best practices in online, other distance education methods, and instructional design.

HIRING RANGE: $55,000-65,000 dependent on experience, education and skills.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of various digital learning platforms such as learning management systems (Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, etc.), publisher platforms (Pearson's MyLabs\Mastering, McGraw-Hill Connect, Cengage MindTap, etc.), and other platforms.
  • Knowledge of instructional design principles, learning theories, and best practices in curriculum development.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, subject matter experts, and other stakeholders.
  • Understanding of accessibility standards and guidelines in course design such as WCAG 2.0 AA.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving abilities to design innovative and engaging online learning experiences.
  • Proficiency in multimedia authoring tools and e-learning software is preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree is required.
  • Master's degree in Instructional Design, Education, or relevant experience in instructional design or related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant experience in instructional design or educational technology is preferred.
  • Experience in higher education is preferred.
  • Successful completion of Quality Matters Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) and Higher Education Peer Reviewer Course (PRC) is preferred and will be required as part of ongoing professional development.
