Job Description: Upper Elementary Head Teacher (grades 4-6)Start Date: Late August 2026
Reports to: Head of Elementary Programs
Brief Description: The Upper Elementary Head Teacher is a full-time, ten-month position. The Upper Elementary Head Teacher will work in conjunction with the Head of Elementary Programs, the Upper Elementary teaching team, the Learning Support Team, the Assistant Head of School, and the Head of School to educate Upper Elementary students in accordance with the BHMS mission, the Statement of Diversity, the principles of Montessori educational philosophy and practices, the curriculum, and BHMS policies. They will lead the classroom team in developing a warm, safe, and caring environment in which children may grow and flourish socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Provide leadership and guidance in the day-to-day functioning of the classroom in collaboration with a teaching partner and Head of ElementaryPlan and teach curriculum for the classroom in accordance with the curriculum of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School, its mission, and Montessori philosophyCollaborate, review, and update the Upper Elementary curriculum as needed in conjunction with the Head of Elementary ProgramsDesign and maintain a prepared classroom environmentFacilitate the intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth of each childMaintain student record-keepingPlan and execute student field tripsBuild relationships and partner with familiesPrepare reports for parents and other schools in accordance with the established policies of Brooklyn Heights Montessori SchoolPrepare for and participate in regular parent-teacher conferences as set forth on the school calendarActively participate in scheduled program level and faculty and staff meetingsAttend and participate in various evening meetings, such as Back-to-School Night Parent Education, as well as Community eventsEstablish and maintain a positive and professional relationship with students, parents, and other teachers and school personnelPrepare annual statement of goals, and objectives for professional developmentSeek and act on feedbackStay abreast of educational trends and developmentsKnow and comply with the established policies and procedures of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School as stated in the Faculty & Staff HandbookPerform various reasonable tasks from time to time as requested by the Head of School or the Head of Elementary or the Assistant Head of SchoolSKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
