Petroleum Construction Laborer

R.W. Mercer Co. is a family-owned construction and service company headquartered in Jackson, Michigan with seven locations – six in Michigan and one in Indiana. The company operates in three distinct areas of construction: petroleum contracting and service, general contracting, and electrical. In each area, R.W. Mercer provides a turn-key approach that includes planning, design, construction, and installation as well as service, monitoring, and maintenance.
A Petroleum Construction Laborer at R.W. Mercer assists in general installation of pipe, concrete, and other miscellaneous site tasks. The Laborer will have the general responsibility to provide support and assistance to other Excavation and Heavy Equipment Operators.
REQUIEMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reports to shop at the start of a shift for the daily assignments. Routine duties are performed with minimal supervision with occasional check of work while in progress, and work being reviewed at completion.
- Perform a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor.
- Perform manual work in preparing surfaces.
- Excavate and fill trenches.
- Maintain a clean job site; pick up all tools & equipment and secure job site each day to eliminate potential hazards.
- Cleans up jobs sites and fills scrap dumpsters by hand, using carts, wheelbarrows, and barrels
- Material handling and storage.
- Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed. Brings problems to the attention of the foreman, safety director, or HR manager.
- Able to prioritize assigned tasks and handle multiple tasks.
- Trenching and pipe and/or conduit laying.
- Layout, trenching, installation of water / fuel piping.
- Performs onsite and shop cleaning, such as power washing of garage floors, sweeping and washing of concrete floors, and organization of materials post construction.
- Conduct weekly inventory of materials in storage area and reports to supervisor.
- Assists Carpenters, Pipefitters, Foreman, Superintendents as a working apprentice learning the trade
- Erect Scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground levels.
- Assists with loading or unloading trucks.
- Unload materials, check delivery tickets, and sign receipt of materials. Communicate ALL discrepancies.
- Assists with basic and minor callbacks.
- Prioritizes assigned tasks and handles multiple tasks simultaneously.

Working is performed primarily outside with some travel; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; exposure to possible hazardous traffic conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery and uneven surfaces and rough terrain; may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a construction environment; walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weights; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Digging and working in trenches. Working in confined spaces, from heights, and hot/cold weather conditions.
