Job Objective:

Performs phlebotomy and specimen processing/handling; processes all specimen types to assure accurate type of registration, processing of specimens, and ordering tests. Subject matter expert for Certified Phlebotomy Tech team for questions and training. Oversees patient and specimen workflow on a daily basis to ensure efficiency and timeliness of patient care.

Essential Responsibilities

1. Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
2. Plans, coordinates, and organizes daily tasks; regularly checks and monitors the group's performance and ensures projects remain on track.
3. Assists with providing guidance, training and leadership to team members to achieve best practice services, aligned with Eisenhower's customer service expectations.
4. Schedules CPT staff according to operational needs; coordinates assignments and distributes workload; manages day-to-day work flow within a group or unit; reports to leadership regarding completion of work flow.
5. Coordinates, implements, and oversees the work of the team assigned to a specific project including identification of assignments and responsibility, establishing work deadlines for project team members and coordinating completion of activities.
6. Properly identifies patient using two identifiers and collects specimens by venipuncture, heelstick, or fingerstick per established protocol.
7. Orders and processes laboratory requests in accordance with established procedures to assure timely and accurate collection and reporting priorities.
8. Adheres to HIPAA standards when using, disclosing or requesting protected health information.
9. Collects and processes all necessary paperwork, assuring appropriate billing and reporting by courier, fax, or laboratory printer.
10. Utilizes time productively: maintains cleanliness (including disinfecting work area), reorders and restocks supplies and assists co-workers with tasks.
11. Follows established protocol for laboratory encounters.
12. Researches specimen problems with resolution and appropriate documentation.
13. Accesses, interprets, and acts on shift/daily follow-up tasks to ensure that all specimens have been processed and in a timely manner.
14. Processes, audits, and orders body fluids correctly for inpatient and outpatient specimens.
15. Consults with professional Clinical Laboratory Scientist staff regarding problems.
16. Works closely with nurses and physicians to ensure that ambiguous or unusual test requests are handled appropriately.
17. Centrifuges and prepares specimens for transport; creates/receives packing lists as needed.
18. Handles laboratory results, reports, shipping documents appropriately.
19. Acts as a liaison for the laboratory to all other departments, staff, patients, and visitors.
20. Answers telephone; responds to questions or directs calls to appropriate individual.
21. Completes monthly phlebotomy competencies in a timely manner; maintains compliance with all training modules.
22. Participates and assists in CPT student extern and MLS student training.
23. Performs daily/weekly/monthly safety and maintenance logs.
24. Performs Laboratory and Emergency Department downtime procedures.
25. Performs other duties as assigned.
