General Summary


The Certified Pharmacy Technician is responsible for executing specialty pharmacy workflow and managing all components of the prescription process under the direction of the Lead Certified Pharmacy Technician and the Pharmacist in Charge. This includes strict adherence to established procedures to ensure accuracy, compliance, and continuity of care.  Given the complexity of the workflow and the high cost of medications handled, precision and accountability are essential. Effective communication within the team supports safe, timely, and affordable medication therapy. The technician must be able to identify what needs to be done, take initiative, and appropriately prioritize competing tasks to ensure the highest level of patient service.

Supervisory Requirements


Identify and discuss areas of opportunity with other technicians according to pharmacy policies and procedures; partnership with lead pharmacy technician is expected if deficiencies in other team members performance are observed

Essential Functions


  1. Follow pharmacy procedures as outlined in the Pharmacy Technician Task List Roles and Responsibilities manual.
  2. Obtain financial assistance and file claims retroactively to apply grant to respective prescriptions resulting in patient financial responsibility.
  3. Maintain A/R balances by sending statements, posting payments, and communication with patients as necessary
  4. Protect patients and staff by adhering to infection control and workplace safety training and procedures.
  5. Accurately enter, bill, count, and sell prescriptions in accordance with applicable laws and procedures  
  6. Disinfect and clean and disinfect pharmacy floors, surfaces, and equipment and document date and active ingredients in products used.
  7. Promptly and accurately enter prescriptions in priority fill
  8. Efficiently contact patients in print que to determine desired priority and communication expectations accordingly
  9. Print and count prescriptions with defined priority in print que using proper prioritization
  10. Monitor all ques within Pioneer to ensure all prescriptions are being actively managed with timeliness
  11. Exhibit excellent customer service in every patient interaction, with attention to both verbal and nonverbal communication
  12. Greet all patients entering the pharmacy promptly with intent to help and a positive attitude
  13. Perform tasks at all pharmacy workflow stations in accordance with expectations outlined in pharmacy procedures including but not limited to priority fill, print que, fill, point of sale, delivery, and shipping. 
  14. Maintain temperatures in the pharmacy between 69-78 degrees.  Retrieve and save electronic temperature logs every 90 days.
  15. Maintain pharmacy inventory by establishing par levels, cycle counting, ordering medications and supplies, verifying and documenting receipt, and checking for and removing expired medications.
  16. Receive inbound and make outbound calls.
  17. Monitor incoming emails and answer, forward, or follow up as required.
  18. Complete prior authorizations using CoverMyMeds and document outcomes in pharmacy system.
  19. Triage scheduled prescriptions fills and contact patients to determine preferred dispensing method
  20. Read, understand, and complete related actions prompted by automated pharmacy reports
  21. Communicate selected prior authorization criteria, medication benefit coverage, and formulary alternatives to physicians and other staff.
  22. Research, resolve, and document physician or patient inquiries and grievances and provide verbal or written results to prescriber, patient, and/or management.
  23. Actively participate in monthly pharmacy team meetings
  24. Complete action items and accomplish goals set forth by pharmacy leadership.
  25. Perform other administrative duties as required.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Must have an active Pharmacy Technician license issued by Alabama Board of Pharmacy, PTCB certification within 6 months of hire, free of any discipline, and attend any CPU's required to maintain license/certification.
  2. 2 years prior experience in a retail or hospital pharmacy.
  3. Must have the ability to steward prescriptions through the dispensing cycle while maintaining proper communication with all involved parties, internal and external to UCA.
  4. Must display advanced reasoning and critical thinking skills
  5. Computer Literacy – 40 words per minute at 95% accuracy
  6. Must show the ability to work independently and within a team excelling in communication, collaboration, adaptability, respect, and service
  7. Must show proficiency in use of pharmacy dispensing software(PioneerRx), electronic health record(AllScripts), supporting applications(Delivery App, CoverMyMeds, UPS WorldShip, Endicia, AssistPoint, Providerflow, Nextiva) and Microsoft applications(Outlook, Teams, Excel, etc.).
  8. Must show the ability to maintain confidentiality, including strict adherence to HIPAA and UCA Guidelines.
  9. Must maintain professionalism in all aspects of role including but not limited to appearance, communication, and timeliness.
