Hours: Fulltime, Monday-Friday, Day

Summary: The Lead Ophthalmic Technician provides the resource management skills for the Department of Ophthalmology and reports to the Manager of the Ophthalmic Technicians. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Inventory requisition via Lawson and other methods of ordering supplies, assist with new hire orientation to the departmental location, instrumentation troubleshooting, liaison between physicians, administration, vendors, and technicians. Supports Management of room assignments for physician clinics, technician schedules in response to the operational needs of the department.

In addition to the management of resources for the clinical division of the practice, the lead technician also: initiates daily huddles with work groups, monitors patient flow, provides collaboration between work groups, employee training and instruction, troubleshooting, problem solving, regulatory compliance inspections, task delegation, incident reporting, and multicultural sensitivity.

The Lead Ophthalmic Technician assists and works under the direct supervision of the Ophthalmologist. The responsibilities require performing a preliminary examination on all patients, which include, however are not limited to, a complete medical and ocular history, visual acuity, lensometry, refractometry, slit lamp exam, applanation tonometry, visual fields, ocular motility, pupil dilation, topography, and pachymetry. If required, Technicians also assist the physician with in office procedures and the completion of consents and surgical forms and other duties as needed. The Lead Ophthalmic Technician exhibits UPHS organizational behavioral competencies which reflect its mission and are embedded in the professional practice competency domains.

Responsibilities:

  • Inventory requisition via Lawson and other methods of ordering supplies
  • New hire training and orientation
  • Initiate daily huddles to ensure regulatory compliance on a daily basis
  • Responsibilities include performing preliminary examinations
  • Completes medical and ocular history on all patients
  • Completes chief complaint and allergies on all patients
  • Completes health screening questions including falls, abuse, depression screening
  • Documents all medications on all patients
  • Administer eye medications according to protocol
  • Perform Humphrey Visual Field testing and Goldman Visual Fields: if applicable
  • Assist in work up of patients before, during and after the following, (but not limited to) Argon, Diode, Yag, and SLT laser
  • Prepare patient and assist with minor in office surgical procedures involving ocular injections, botox injections, chalazions, Temporal Artery Biopsies, oculoplastics procedures, and suture removal procedures if applicable
  • Completion of surgical, all procedures, and pre-cert insurance forms when required
  • Schedule MRI's and retrieve reports if applicable
  • Performs Universal Protocol on all patients receiving procedures
  • Collaborate with pharmacies to ensure patient Rx's are filled
  • Train other Technicians as assigned by manager
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

Credentials:

  • COT, Certified Ophthalmic Technician (Required within 12 months of hire). Employee hired prior to September 2023 will not be required to fulfill this certification qualification
  • COA, Certified Ophthalmic Assistant preferred
  • COMT, Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist preferred
  • CPR, American Heart Association preferred

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED Required
  • And 3+ years ophthalmic tech experience Required
  • Associate of Arts or Science preferred

Skills and Abilities:

  • Effectively engages in the process of teamwork, cooperation, coordination and collaboration preferred
  • Ability to effectively and safely utilize all equipment preferred
  • Ability to follow all required protocols preferred
  • Ability to multi-task preferred
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations preferred
  • Experience in a healthcare environment preferred
  • Understanding of the Joint Commission and Department of Health process preferred
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance preferred
  • Maintain all life safety competencies preferred
  • Knowledge of safety and emergency procedures preferred
