Position Overview: A Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) is a professional responsible for providing support, guidance, and counseling to individuals struggling with substance abuse issues. The primary objective of a CSAC is to assist individuals in overcoming addiction, maintaining sobriety, and promoting overall well-being.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assessment and Evaluation:
    • Conduct comprehensive assessments to determine the extent and nature of the client's substance abuse problem.
    • Evaluate clients' physical, psychological, and emotional health, as well as their social and environmental factors contributing to substance abuse.
  2. Individualized Treatment Planning:
    • Develop personalized treatment plans based on clients' assessments, needs, and goals.
    • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated care and alignment with evidence-based practices.
  3. Counseling and Therapy:
    • Provide individual and group counseling sessions to address substance abuse issues, mental health concerns, and co-occurring disorders.
    • Utilize various therapeutic modalities such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to facilitate behavioral change and promote recovery.
  4. Education and Support:
    • Educate clients and their families about the effects of substance abuse, addiction, and the process of recovery.
    • Offer support and guidance to clients in developing coping skills, relapse prevention strategies, and healthy lifestyle habits.
  5. Case Coordination:
    • Coordinate referrals to external resources such as medical professionals, support groups, vocational training programs, and social services.
    • Advocate for clients' needs and rights within the healthcare system and community settings.
  6. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate and confidential client records, including assessment findings, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
    • Prepare and submit reports as required by regulatory agencies, funding sources, and organizational policies.
  7. Professional Development:
    • Stay abreast of current trends, research findings, and best practices in the field of substance abuse counseling.
    • Pursue ongoing training, certifications, and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.

Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) or equivalent with at least 1 year of experience.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field.
  • Strong understanding of addiction theory, behavioral health principles, and treatment modalities.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and empathetic listening skills.
  • Ability to establish rapport, build therapeutic alliances, and maintain professional boundaries with clients.
  • Proficiency in conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, and implementing evidence-based interventions.
  • Familiarity with ethical guidelines, confidentiality regulations, and legal requirements governing substance abuse counseling practice.
