  • Respond swiftly to fire alarms, medical emergencies, and rescue situations with professionalism and urgency.
  • Operate fire suppression equipment, including hoses, extinguishers, and pumps to control and extinguish fires effectively.
  • Provide first aid, basic life support (BLS), and CPR to stabilize patients until advanced medical help arrives.
  • Assess the scene for hazards, conduct safety inspections, and secure the area to prevent further incidents.
  • Drive emergency vehicles safely under various conditions while adhering to traffic laws and safety protocols.
  • Conduct routine maintenance checks on firefighting gear, medical supplies, and emergency vehicles to ensure readiness at all times.
  • Gather vital signs, document incident reports accurately, and communicate effectively with team members and emergency responders.
  • Assist in mechanical troubleshooting or minor repairs of firefighting equipment when necessary.
  • Engage in ongoing training exercises to stay current with firefighting techniques, medical procedures, and safety standards.

At the time of submission of the application, all applicants shall have the following qualifications:

  • United States Citizen.
  • To complete a profile and schedule a test for this position, go to and follow the instructions. Click to see upcoming EMPCO Test Dates. There is a fee to take the examination, but all participating fire departments in Michigan will accept the results of this one test. You must complete your profile, and have a current passing score.
  • Completion of a valid CPAT or OPAT with a passing score current within one year of the application period.
  • Applicants must have completed either the Oakland Physical Agility Test (OPAT) or the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT).
  • Attained the age of 18.
  • Free of any abnormality of eyesight, and have at least 20/40 uncorrected vision and 20/30 corrected vision with adequate color and depth perception.
  • Hold a valid Michigan Driver's (or Chauffeur's) License and must have a good driving record.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must pass the oral examination with a minimum score of 70%. The top 6 (and ties) qualified candidates will then undergo a Chief's evaluation for consideration of an employment offer.
  • Must have obtained either a Firefighter II Certificate and basic EMT-B license or a State of Michigan Paramedics license with a current ACLS certification.
  • Completion of EMPCO written test with a passing score current within one year of the application period.
