For five decades, the Environmental Law Institute (ELI) has played a pivotal role in shaping the fields of environmental law, policy, and management, both domestically and internationally.
ELI is hiring for a part-time, interim Chief Financial Officer for 6-12 months to oversee our Finance department. This role is responsible for the formulation of strategic direction in concert with the President and Board of Directors, understanding the current and potential risks to the Institute, and overseeing and managing the financial systems processes of the Institute.
PRIMARY GOALS/OBJECTIVES
- Oversee the budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and audit of the Institute
- Ensure leadership and staff have the fiscal tools and resources to manage effectively
- Ensure that ELI is in compliance with all laws, rules, and regulations related to the Institute's Operations
- Liaise with and support the Board Finance & Investment Committee and Audit & Risk Management Committee
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directs the organization's financial operations, including accounting systems and reports, accounts receivable and payable, budget preparation and monitoring, financial forecasting, cash flow projections, expense controls and approvals, and insurance.
- Maintains primary contact with outside investment managers and consultants and oversees their performance, under general direction of the President and Board's Finance and Executive Committees and within stated investment policies and guidelines.
- Maintains primary contact with the independent auditors.
- Oversees the annual audit process, and submission of federal, state, and local tax reports.
- Reviews all contracts, state unemployment, and withholding registrations and signs on behalf of the Institute; and manages office lease and any subleases.
- Advises on the organization's personnel administration program, including personnel policies, performance evaluations, salary policies and practices, employee complaints and grievances, employee benefit plans, and maintenance of personnel records.
- Staffs the Board of Directors' Finance & Investment Committee and Audit & Risk Management Committee, under direction of the President. Provides staff services to the Treasurer of the Board, including preparation of regular financial reports and commentary.
- Supervise the Director of Finance.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/COMPETENCIES
- Degree or equivalent experience: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- CPA certification is preferred.
- Demonstrated strategic leadership of finance and risk management functions, with proven track record of success in all operational and strategic areas of these functions.
- Deep analytic and problem-solving aptitude and a questioning personality to understand the complexities and nuances of each issue.
- Experience developing, overseeing and tracking budgets and creating relevant tools and systems.
- 10+ years of experience in finance and risk management.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/COMPETENCIES
- Track record of building, supporting, and facilitating teams, including demonstrated success as an effective coach and mentor to staff.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple sites/lines of business.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to digest and distill complex subjects into clear messages.
- Expert at time management and bias toward action.
COMPENSATION
This part-time position is envisioned at approximately a 50% schedule. Compensation for this position is pro-rated according to a full-time equivalent salary of $156,113 to $182,000. ELI's total compensation includes excellent benefits including:
