Data Scientist – Port of Long Beach, CA

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Data Scientist to support data transformation, business intelligence initiatives, and executive reporting for a major public-sector client. This role focuses on converting complex, multisource data into clear, accurate, and actionable insights that help drive operational, analytical, and strategic decisions.

In this position, you will develop BI solutions, validate data integrity, design data models, and create dashboards and visualizations across multiple business units. The ideal candidate is highly analytical, collaborative, and experienced in working with modern BI tools and large data environments.

This opportunity follows a hybrid schedule, with 2–3 days per week onsite in Long Beach, CA during Pacific Time business hours. Fully remote arrangements may be considered only when an accommodation is required.

Key Responsibilities

• Participate in full solution development lifecycle activities: planning, design, development, testing, migration, and support
• Gather, organize, analyze, and interpret large datasets with high attention to accuracy
• Build ETL workflows, semantic models, and metadata to support enterprise reporting
• Develop dashboards, reports, and data extractions using tools such as Power BI or Tableau
• Partner with stakeholders to understand data needs, define requirements, and identify improvement opportunities
• Validate data integrity and ensure consistency across systems
• Create documentation, data lineage, and technical specifications
• Implement enhancements, workarounds, and optimization solutions related to data flows
• Develop UI/portal components for information display (static, dynamic, or interactive)
• Utilize SQL, Python, R, or similar languages for data analysis and transformation
• Support periodic cybersecurity training reporting needs using SQL and BI platforms

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or equivalent experience
• 3+ years of experience in business intelligence development
• 3+ years working with Microsoft Power BI (SharePoint 2019, PBIRS/SSRS, Excel 2019/2021)
• 3+ years of experience with project or software development lifecycles
• 3+ years of experience with data warehousing methodologies (ETL, data modeling)
• Experience writing SQL queries and working with Microsoft SQL Server (2017/2019/2022)
• Experience with BI tools such as SSRS, SSAS, PBIRS, or Tableau
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
• Ability to explain insights clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office tools

Preferred Skills

• Experience with VBA in Excel or Access
• Familiarity with forecasting, financial calculations, capacity planning, and data flow mapping
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work across teams
• Strong documentation and presentation skills

Working Conditions

• Hybrid role with onsite work in Long Beach, CA (2–3 days per week)
• Remote work occurs during Pacific Time business hours
• Involves extended periods of computer-based work
• Occasional travel for meetings, trainings, or workshops may be required
