Position Summary

Under supervision, the Technologist is responsible for the preparation and execution of ionizing radiation for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research purposes. Performs a variety of technical procedures that will require independent judgment, with ingenuity and initiative to obtain required images for diagnosis, research and therapeutic procedures. Will routinely perform all duties assigned consistent with Department's commitment to providing quality health care services in a compassionate and humane manner. Adheres to work standards as outlined in departmental manuals.

Responsibilities
COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY:
This technologist performs diagnostic, research, and therapeutic procedures. Including assisting the Radiologist with CT guided biopsies and aspirations. Reviews all orders and documents, i.e. lab work and CT screening form. Prepares contrast as needed for each examination. Must be NYS certified for contrast media and vascular injection and deemed proficient by NYP's radiologists. Appropriately documents all information in RIS, HIS, PACs and EMR.

  • Completes exams in RIS in a timely fashion. Performs all daily, weekly and monthly QA as required by State and certifying bodies to ensure safe operation of equipment. Collects patient history and explains the procedure to the patient and ensures appropriate protocol for each exam including prescreening and verification of procedure(s).
  • Verifies patient identification. Explains procedure and verifies preparation for diagnostic or research exam. Prepares, positions and instructs patients regarding the procedure(s) to obtain the most effective desired diagnostic imaging results as specified by the physician.
  • Reviews clinical information on requisition for each patient and identifies any potential discrepancies between the order and protocol escalates appropriately before patients are scanned. Updates order in EMR system. Follows applicable Departmental procedures to ensure every patient receives the correct exam.
  • Acquires IV access and administers IV contrast in accordance with exam protocols and guidelines. Prepares, and executes the appropriate examination according to the standard operating procedures or the radiologist in charge as specified in Article 89, Section Documents IV placement and contrast administration in EMR systems.
  • Monitor and reviews processed images to be sure that they are of acceptable diagnostic or research quality. QAs images in PACS. Performs image post processing as needed. Develops and revises, when necessary, imaging research procedures in accordance with applicable regulations and requested. Creates written protocols and scanning parameters when requested.
  • Selects and operates equipment according to the specific diagnostic procedure involved. Performs quality control tests on imaging CT scanners and other related equipment. Documents results according to Departmental policy.
  • Schedule (research only) patient procedures appropriate to the indication and in the proper sequence. Checks in patients Responsible for efficient throughput and workflow, minimizes patient wait times.
  • Responsible for communication about delays, escalates barriers to patient flow and mitigates delays to care/service with follow through. Ensures exams are charged and completed correctly, and timely.
  • Complete required research documentation such as; Checklists, iLab, Redcap, Sponsor forms, research logs.
  • Practices sterile techniques and prevents cross contamination.
  • Maintains equipment and department work areas as per Article 28 guidelines in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Interfaces with computers for the purpose of data acquisition during Imaging Procedures.
  • Observes all safety standards/procedures, including Department radiation safety manual
  • Works continuously to improve patient satisfaction scores.
  • Transport imaging patients and/or diagnostic machine equipment when time sensitive.
  • Assists radiologist and other physicians in performing exams.
  • Reports Malfunction of equipment to escalation contact and initiates service calls.
  • Provides guidance and instruction for individuals such as but not limited to staff, students, faculty and Principle Investigators.
  • Requests and restocks patient care supplies when needed.
  • Follows Institutional Research Board protocols, comply with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and Food and Drug Administration standards. Maintains CITI Training
  • Performs emergency care when directed.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

OSHA

  • Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiography program
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus three years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Recent relevant experience in human and animal research.

Other Requirements
Work Experience

  • Minimum one year experience in Computed Tomography

Licensure/ Certifications

  • New York State licensure in Radiography and certified by New York State to inject contrast media
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification in Radiography and Computed Tomography. Maintains continuing education credits per American Registry of Radiologic Technologists requirements.
