Railway Products Group Inc. (RPG) designs, engineers, and fabricates parts for transit and railroad vehicles, including heavy rail long distance cars, metros, light rail vehicles, streetcars and ferries. We have been in business for 35 years and serve many Federal, State and private company customers. Our office and 50,000 square foot factory is in Baltimore, MD and we employ 30+ people.

Job Description Summary

The CFO / CAO / Director of Finance is responsible for preforming, managing and supervising all accounting, financial reporting and analysis, and compliance operations for Railway Products Group Inc. In this position, you will serve as a credible, knowledgeable, and trusted financial resource to the Railway Products Group executive management team.

The ideal candidate will possess prior manufacturing experience, job costing experience and has led a financial department that provides all accounting activities, financial planning and analysis for a mid-size company.

The candidate will work with operational leadership to prioritize and align production to achieve financial targets. Lead the development and use of best-practice policies, procedures, and tools to ensure a well-controlled yet flexible organization with strong fiscal management, cross team communications and workflows.

Work as a strategic partner with executive management to provide input and guidance on controlling costs, effective utilization of assets with the goal to improve overall plant performance and profitability.

Role and Responsibilities:

Accounting Policies, Process/Procedures & Controls

  • Ensure the integrity of the general ledger accounting system and the accurate processing of all financial transactions (accounts payable/receivables, bank reconciliations, payroll-related processes, fixed assets, receiving, journal entries, etc.)
  • Implement and update policies and procedures as necessary, in accordance with GAAP, that enable accurate, timely and relevant financial statement preparation
  • Ensure all company obligations are scheduled and paid on time.
  • Assist CEO to oversee and direct the company's day-to-day financial activities to ensure sufficient cash flow is maintained to meet operational and strategic financial needs.
  • Conduct recurring evaluations of business processes and procedures and implement appropriate modifications which result in improved data integrity and meaningful/useful information
  • Implement logical and appropriate cost allocation methodologies and conduct recurring evaluations/reviews resulting in improved cost allocation
  • Implement proper expense, headcount and capital expenditure control and approval processes
  • Set appropriate standards for quality and efficiency of the financial reporting process
  • Ensure appropriate internal controls and procedures are in place
  • Adhere to the documented processes and procedures for all cash expenditures (accounts payable, wire transfers, ACH, credit card, payroll)
  • Actively manage finance and accounting team
  • Develop an environment in which ad hoc operational and financial analysis is being conducted which identifies new opportunities for business improvement and/or recurring reporting

Recurring Financial Reporting and Analysis

  • Prepare financial reports and statements such as income statements, balance sheets, account reconciliations, and job cost reports
  • Plan, direct, coordinate, and review all monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements accurately to a schedule that ensures completion prior to deadlines
  • Develop improvements to month-end close process
  • Develop relevant, meaningful, and comprehensive financial management reports
  • Conduct recurring (i.e. monthly/quarterly) financial and operational reviews with management
  • Ensure that Railway Products Group strictly adheres to all tax filing dates without extensions
  • Be able to explain financial topics to non-finance educated staff

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Coordinate the development, review and final approval of the annual financial/operational budget to a predetermined schedule
  • Develop the annual budget based on (a) a reliable, accurate model, (b) incorporating valid business assumptions and (3) incorporating the input of executive leadership
  • Incorporate into the review and analysis of the annual budgeting process (a) meaningful/relevant metrics, KPI's (b) comparisons versus prior periods and (c) documented explanations for material changes

Internal & External Business Partner Support

  • Provide strategic, financial and operational direction to internal Department Managers, and others to develop and maintain an environment of accountability and fiscal responsibility
  • Participate in the negotiation of contracts with external customers and vendors (terms, pricing, discounts, etc.) and ensure financial contract compliance is followed

Staff & Organizational Development

  • Evaluate performance and provide recurring oral and written feedback to all direct reports
  • Evaluate Finance & Accounting team, focusing on continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group, as well as provide individuals with professional growth opportunities
  • Ensure that members of the Finance & Accounting department make a commitment to learn and understand the business processes, challenges and data needs of each department
  • Ensure that members of the Finance & Accounting department consistently challenge the status quo, proactively identify and implement new processes/reporting and eliminate any unnecessary processes/reporting
  • Create an environment and culture that promotes teamwork, personal accountability and respect for others
  • Ensure that training and written procedures are in place and are disseminated to other affected departments

Accounting and Supporting Software Systems

  • Conduct recurring evaluations of how Sage 100 is being utilized resulting in the identification and implementation of (a) new capabilities, (b) accounting process changes, (c) opportunities for improved user training and (d) automation opportunities
  • Responsible for the ongoing creation, organization and timely updating of financial and operational reports

Acquisitions and Business Development

  • Supporting the CEO and executive team to create and deliver growth strategies and plans
  • Assist in evaluating and pursuing acquisition opportunities

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration. Master's degree, CPA, or CMA preferred
  • ERP knowledge required, Sage 100 or Fulcrum experience a plus
  • 5+ years relevant CPA/CFO/CAO experience
  • Manufacturing experience preferred
  • Expertise in job costing and % of completion methodology required
  • Strong leadership and analytical skills
