POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position: Shift Supervisor

Supervisor:    Laurelwood Shelter Manager

Location:        Laurelwood Shelter

Hours: Wednesday-Sunday 4pm-12am

Wage: $27.56 hourly + $0.50 hourly swing shift differential, eligible for language differential

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist in the oversight of shelter services and programming in a manner that is consistent with Transition Projects mission, values, policies and procedures. Function as the operational supervisor of shelter shift activities. Provide advocacy, information, and referral services to participants staying in emergency shelters. Actively participate in shelter processes and work as part of a team to provide services to participants. This is a non-exempt, unrepresented full-time position.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provide leadership, support, and positive role modeling for shelter staff. Promote a team environment where participant needs and success are paramount.
  2. Demonstrate and empower staff to take initiative, problem solve, prevent and deescalate crises, and while maintaining a safe space.
  3. Function as an active member of the shelter staff team.
  4. Perform all of the functions of residential positions, including but not limited to Residential Advocate and Custodian.
  5. Facilitate staff and team meetings in the absence of the manager.
  6. Coordinate and provide coverage for team members when they are absent.
  7. Assist in developing and implementing on-the-job training and guidance for Residential Advocates.
  8. Provide support and assist staff in following policies and procedures.
  9. Assist with program design, implementation, and evaluation to increase access to and efficiency of the residential programs, as directed.
  10. Function as the managing supervisor of operations and staff as directed or in absence of manager and/or director, including extended absence and position vacancy.
  11. Contribute to the selection of staff during the hiring process.
  12. Contribute to the performance evaluation of staff, including performance appraisals, performance improvement plans, and disciplinary action. As directed, assist in the bi-weekly review and approval of staff timecards in Paycom, including correcting all clocking errors and approving time off requests in a timely manner.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

Each Transition Projects employee must:

  1. Acquire First Aid/CPR/AED certification within 30 days of hire and be retested biannually thereafter throughout employment.
  2. Complete Bloodborne Pathogens and Narcan Training within 30 days of hire and be retested annually thereafter throughout employment.
  3. Demonstrate reliability by being present for work as scheduled, arriving and leaving on time and taking breaks in expected time frames.
  4. Interact effectively with individuals of different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives, treating each person with respect and dignity.
  5. Attend agency and program staff meetings.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical and mental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee, with or without accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  1. Hearing and vision adequate for interaction with participants, interaction with staff and interaction with the general public.
  2. Hearing adequate for telephone work. Vision adequate for close work.
  3. Hand and finger dexterity adequate to operate standard office equipment.
  4. Ability to walk, bend, stand, sit, reach, stoop, pull, squat, kneel, climb stairs and ladders
  5. Sitting at a desk completing paperwork and working on a computer for lengthy periods.
  6. Ability to perform CPR and other emergency life-saving care with the assistance of teammates until emergency responders arrive.
  7. Ability to lift 50 pounds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The right individual for this position is resourceful and innovative, a strong leader, has a passion for helping others, and is able to deal with difficult situations in positive and constructive ways. This position also requires the following qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in related field -OR- 2 years of experience in social services (shelter environment preferred).
  2. Experience working with homeless/low-income population helpful.
  3. Demonstrated ability to train, lead, and provide support to colleagues.
  4. Demonstrated ability to be an effective problem solver.
  5. Understanding of the issues surrounding homelessness, chemical dependency, mental health, domestic violence and sexual assault.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently. Ability to appropriately assess a situation and take corrective action as necessary.
  7. Knowledge of services available to low-income and homeless persons through Transition Projects and other agencies or the demonstrated ability to obtain such knowledge.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in the delivery of services to participants.
  9. Computer literacy. Demonstrated ability to use word processing, database, spreadsheet, e- mail, and Internet programs.
  10. Excellent oral, written, and telephone communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  11. Bilingual English/Spanish fluency is strongly preferred.
  12. Office/clerical experience. Familiarity with office equipment (copier, fax, multi-line phone system, etc.).
