Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Radiological Protection Technician located at Cooper Nuclear Station in Brownville, Nebraska.  Position closes December 31, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time or until filled.  

Position Summary

The major responsibility of the Radiological Protection (RP) Technician is to monitor and maintain the following as specified in the individual employee training plan: radwaste processing, decontamination, environmental controls, and personnel safety. RP Technicians perform radiation and contamination surveys thus protecting plant systems, the general public, and meeting regulatory requirements. This position will report to the applicable RP Supervisor. This position will be assigned to a position within the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) that requires response to the station when an emergency is declared. Assignment to one of these positions and a condition of continued employment will be the ability to arrive at the station to perform ERO responsibilities within 45 minutes of notification of an emergency.

Education, Training and Experience

Must be qualified to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) N requirements. (Documentation of qualification is a condition of employment.)

Must be able to qualify to the specific employee training plan developed for this position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Provide protection of personnel and the environment from unnecessary radiation exposure, monitor and maintain strict controls on the spread of radioactive contamination, and ensure the safe handling of radioactive material.

Ensure compliance with standards, procedures, and the code of federal regulations. Operate in accordance with the regulations. Failure to comply may result in violations, enforcement actions, endangering the safety and welfare of the general public and the environment.

Document and maintain accurate records to provide a thorough documentation of equipment calibrations, radiation safety surveys, radiological analysis results, quality control documents, and the many other documents necessary to defend against future litigations or other documentation as demanded to fulfill the specific employee training plan.

Collect and analyze samples from various plant systems throughout Cooper Nuclear Station (CNS) for quantitative and qualitative evaluations. Conventional and microprocessor equipment will be used.

Perform routine radiological surveys to evaluate the hazards in the workplace and/or hazards to plant equipment.

Provide controls and guidance for workers to perform tasks in areas with elevated hazards. Capable of evaluation of internal exposures to inhaled or ingested radioactive contamination, and to evaluate the respiratory protection and contamination control programs.

Perform inspections of plant areas to ensure adequate housekeeping and that barriers and postings describing radiological hazards such as high radiation, airborne contamination, and surface contamination levels, and other similar hazards are sufficient to inform workers of area conditions and are in compliance with regulations, standards, and procedures.

Provide back shift coverage to meet emergency plan requirements for monitoring radiological/chemical conditions to mitigate radiological emergencies.

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range.  Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.

Pay Grade - 13 Hourly

Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range: $ $58.69

Travel Required:   Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
