Job Duties:

The City of Virginia Beach is hiring a Heavy Equipment Operator with our Waste Management Division to operate the division's heavy construction and maintenance equipment.

Duties include:

  • Operate bulldozers, excavators, landfill compactor, off road dirt trucks, material reduction grinders, large mowing equipment on slopes etc. in performing maintenance operations at sanitary landfills and clearing operations.
  • Service and make minor repairs and/or adjustments on equipment to prevent major breakdowns.
  • Supervise and train subordinate equipment operators to increase their skills and proficiency.
  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.
  • Safely and proficiently operate assigned equipment including bulldozer, landfill compactor, off road dirt trucks, material reducing grinders, large mowing equipment on slopes.
  • Thoroughly perform preventive maintenance and practice accident prevention; independently work within standard procedures and capable of adaption of when confronted with new or unusual circumstances.
  • Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

Pre-employment physical is required.

Must possess a Commercial Driver's License – Class B (VA or NC)

Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus.

Please Note: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies

  • CDL Hiring Bonus - The $4,000 CDL (Class A or B) Hiring Bonus is for newly hired employees only. The bonus will be paid in three increments during the first year of employment.

  • $1,000 with first paycheck

  • $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with "meets expectation" performance rating)
  • $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with "meets expectation" performance rating)

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Tenth grade plus five (5) years experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as Motor Equipment Operator or Heavy Equipment Operator; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. A Commercial Drivers License may be required.

Knowledge of Waste Management Disposal equipment and maintenance requirements.

Knowledge (basic) of engineering principles as it pertains to landfill designs.

Knowledge in operating and inspecting Waste Disposal equipment for pre and post trip evaluations to ensure safe and cost effective operation.

Skill in the operation of complex heavy equipment under all weather conditions and operating surfaces in high volume operational requirements.

Providing quality customer service.

Detect needed mechanical work (engines, brakes, hydraulics) and clean/make minor repairs on heavy equipment.

Ability to train and supervise the work of others.

Must have a valid Waste Management Faculty Operators License

Current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver's license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver's license eligibility requirements.
