ESSENTIAL POSITION PURPOSE

This student support position serves students through both the TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO) program and the Academic Success Center (ASC), providing a one-stop resource to help connect students with campus resources, assist those experiencing academic difficulty, and develop individualized plans for success. The position supports students through registration, advising, and graduation planning, while also organizing and facilitating programming for grant-eligible students.

The position reports directly to TRIO and maintains a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Academic Success Center to promote collaboration, alignment of student success efforts, and consistency in the student experience across both areas.

KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The position will work closely with other staff members in the Academic Success Center and the TRIO area. It also works in conjunction with faculty and athletics to best serve our students. In addition, the role will need to communicate and work with other areas of student support including but not limited to the registrar's office, financial aid, student accounts, career services, and student engagement.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Communication and Collaboration

  • Partner with faculty to create an inclusive environment where students are engaged, active partners in their learning and educational experience.
  • Coordinate with coaches in order to facilitate academic progress for individuals and teams (ASC).
  • Help students connect with resources on and off campus, including The Writing Center, Financial Aid, Registrar, Career Services, referral to mental health resources and other academic and co-curricular support areas.
  • Create platforms to solicit ongoing feedback from students for how to improve service.
  • Plan and provide informational presentations and workshops as requested (TRIO).
  • Perform all duties in a manner which promotes and reflects the University and Providence mission and philosophy.

Student Experience

  • Plan and attend graduate school visits (TRIO).
  • Organize and facilitate programming for grant-eligible students (TRIO).
  • Document all activities and contact with students in StudentAccess (TRIO SSS Database) and assist with maintenance of electronic student files (TRIO).
  • Inform students of the activities sponsored by the Title IV SSS project (TRIO).
  • Establish personal connections with students to increase retention and provide consistent individual support.
  • Create and maintain success plans with at-risk students, including short- and long-term goals and graduation plan tracking.
  • Help students learn college skills, including study strategies, test taking, time management, communicating with staff and faculty, etc.
  • Assist with development of intervention programs for at-risk students, students on academic alert, and students on probation, suspension, or warning.
  • Maintain academic alert system through tracking and updating interventions.
  • Function as secondary academic advisors to a group of assigned students and assist students with decision-making skills for educational, vocational, and personal choices.
  • Advise and register first-time freshmen and help facilitate registration of transfer students (ASC).
  • Advise students with course load, course content, academic regulations, and university procedures and complete Personal Education Plans (PEPs) (TRIO).

Policy, Accreditation, Compliance, and Quality Assurance

  • Ensure compliance with Title IV SSS grant requirements (TRIO).
  • Document student interactions and maintain electronic files accurately (TRIO).
  • Maintain academic alert and student progress documentation for reporting and audit purposes.

Community Engagement

  • Help students connect with off-campus resources such as mental health services and community support programs.
  • Plan and attend graduate school visits (TRIO).

Professional Development

  • Engage in ongoing training related to student success, advising, FERPA, and grant compliance.
  • Participate in workshops, conferences, or campus committees to enhance professional skills and promote student success initiatives.

ESSENTIAL POSITION COMPETENCIES AND REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree required.

Experience

  • Knowledge and understanding of adult learning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Education, or related field preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Jenzabar, Slate, and alert systems is preferred.
  • Previous experience with TRIO/SSS preferred.
  • Experience working with specific college-age populations (e.g., traditional, non-traditional, Veterans, ESL, or International) preferred.
