Department: Facilities / Maintenance

Reports To: General Manager

Location: Columbus, OH

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

The Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing all maintenance operations within the manufacturing facility to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of equipment, utilities, and building systems.

This is a hands-on leadership position — the ideal candidate will not only supervise and develop the maintenance team but also actively participate in troubleshooting, repairs, and system improvements.

The role requires advanced technical expertise in electrical systems, controls, hydronic HVAC, and plumbing, as well as strong leadership skills to drive maintenance excellence and equipment reliability.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, train, and mentor a team of maintenance technicians and coordinate with 3rd party electricians, and HVAC specialists.
  • Work alongside team members to diagnose and repair equipment issues — providing direct technical support and guidance.
  • Manage maintenance scheduling, work orders, and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and teamwork.

Hands-On Technical Responsibilities

  • Perform and assist with electrical troubleshooting and repair, including motors, drives, power distribution, and control panels.
  • Work directly on automation and control systems such as PLCs, VFDs, sensors, and instrumentation.
  • Conduct maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of hydronic HVAC systems (boilers, chillers, pumps, piping, and heat exchangers).
  • Diagnose and repair plumbing systems, including domestic water, process water, compressed air, and waste systems.
  • Participate in system upgrades, installations, and commissioning of new equipment.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance situations to minimize downtime.

Reliability, Safety & Compliance

  • Analyze equipment performance and implement corrective and preventive actions to improve uptime.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements (OSHA, EPA, local codes).
  • Lead safety initiatives, including lockout/tagout, confined space, and electrical safety programs.
  • Maintain documentation for inspections, repairs, and compliance reporting.

Strategic & Administrative Duties

  • Develop maintenance budgets, manage spare parts inventory, and oversee procurement of materials.
  • Collaborate with operations to support production goals and facility projects.
  • Use data-driven methods to identify reliability issues and optimize maintenance strategies.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering preferred; equivalent technical experience considered.
  • Minimum of 7 years of maintenance experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Demonstrated success in a hands-on maintenance leadership role.

Technical Expertise

  • Strong knowledge of industrial electrical systems, power distribution, and controls.
  • Working proficiency with automation and PLC-based systems.
  • Deep understanding of hydronic HVAC systems, including boilers, chillers, and pumps.
  • Solid knowledge of industrial plumbing systems and piping.
  • Familiarity with CMMS platforms and preventive maintenance processes.
  • Additional experience with mechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic systems is a plus.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Licensed Electrician, HVAC Technician, or Plumbing License.
  • OSHA 30-hour certification or equivalent.
  • Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP) or similar credential.

Core Competencies

  • Hands-on technical leadership and strong troubleshooting ability.
  • Excellent problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and capable of prioritizing multiple demands.
  • Commitment to safety, reliability, and operational excellence.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Must be able to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, heat, and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to climb ladders, lift up to 50 lbs, and perform hands-on work as needed.
  • Must be available for after-hours or weekend support for critical maintenance issues.
