GENERAL PURPOSE: Performs a wide variety of administrative and clerical duties to help ensure the ongoing operation of the museum facilities and grounds, including providing regional and local historic information to the public; assists in regional and local historic research; organizes and keeps inventory of historic artifacts and conducts educational tours of museum. Responsible for staffing the museum at the Wheat Ridge Historical Park, answering questions, guiding tours, and providing miscellaneous services to visitors. Also responsible for filing and cataloging donations with direction from volunteers.

Wheat Ridge was founded during the 1859 Gold Rush as a rest stop for miners and later named for its golden wheat fields. As unsuccessful miners turned to farming, the area thrived with orchards, vegetable fields, and later, greenhouses, earning the title "Carnation City." Incorporated in 1969, Wheat Ridge now offers a central location with easy access to Denver and the Rocky Mountains. It operates as a home-rule city with a council-manager government, where the elected council sets policy, and the manager oversees daily operations and budgeting.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Staffs the museum information desk and serves as initial point of contact with varied members of the public. Answers telephones, schedules tours, assist program participants and other reception duties as needed. Presents and leads tours providing general information relating to the historical themes of the park. Creates exhibits as needed. Presents programs to children and assists teachers with their visits. Develops positive relations with visitors. Provides information concerning facility and program(s) to visitors. Coordinates with the Wheat Ridge Historical Society as needed. Document and submit building and grounds maintenance concerns via a shift summary report to Supervisor. Staff are responsible for securing their own substitutes in their absence from amongst other qualified department staff, within reasonable advance notice.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be 18 years or older. Able to instruct and oversee groups of all ages and can enforce safety regulations firmly and express ideas clearly and concisely. Can establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, the public, volunteers and those of other agencies. No formal education is required. Can communicate effectively orally and in writing, manage multiple concurrent tasks. Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Preferred qualifications:
  • Historical preservation experience, specifically with buildings and documents.
  • Tour guide experience
  • Experience working with participants with disabilities

HOURS OF WORK, LOCATION, AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: This is a part time position and hours will vary based on program needs. The ability to properly operate or use the following equipment is necessary for this position: computer, Paycom clock in/out system, telephone, arts and crafts supplies, and cleaning supplies.

Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment. Work involves working closely with others, hearing, speaking, and writing; intermittently sitting, standing, and walking. Occasional light lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs, reaching, bending, crouching or stooping, twisting, squatting; may require the use of tools or equipment requiring a degree of dexterity; requires reading, detailed work, problem solving, reasoning, customer contact. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, manage multiple concurrent tasks.
