About New Hope for Families
New Hope provides emergency shelter for children and the parents who come with them. In addition, we provide top-ranked preschool for shelter residents and the broader community.
Our Mission:
New Hope for Families provides shelter and early learning programs to keep families together and lift every child into a promising future.
About the Shelter
The Live In Building Supervisor is a member of the New Hope Shelter team. When a family with minor children faces a housing crisis, like sleeping outside or in a vehicle, The Shelter team intervenes with emergency overnight shelter. Families bunk in a locked, private bedroom and share the kitchen, laundry and common spaces with other residents. We provide housing-focused case management designed to help families reconnect to affordable housing as quickly as possible. More than 80% of our families do, and it only takes an average of 90 days. We can shelter 12 families at a time, but also divert many more to other safe situations where they can access a new lease.
About The Job
We are searching for a positive, enthusiastic applicant who thrives on a team and around other people. The best candidate enjoys cleaning and organizing, is delighted by children, and has an empathetic disposition toward people in crisis. The Live In Building Supervisor performs two critical roles at the Shelter. First, they take ownership of the shelter building, specifically completing light maintenance work as needed and cleaning in the living spaces. Second, they serve as a cool-headed, responsive presence on-site in case of emergencies, like a shelter intake or lockout. This role is a new exciting opportunity to join our team in Fall of 2025, as we continue our work, ending family homelessness in Bloomington, IN.
The Live In Building Supervisor cares for families' needs by creating a sanitary, well-supplied home. In addition, the supervisor interacts with families to build a positive, mentoring relationship, enforces shelter rules, supervises residents, and performs light custodial work. The Site Supervisor supports occasional weekend programming like tutoring and craft nights by overseeing volunteers and work groups who interact with families. This position is essential to offering a safe, harmonious, and sanitary shelter for our resident families.
Light Maintenance
We provide shelter for up to 12 families at a time. Families bunk in a private, locked bedroom and share a common kitchen, dining space, and laundry room with other residents. We have 3 suites that accommodate 4 families each. In each common kitchen, there are 2 of every appliance (dishwasher, microwave, oven, stove, sink, etc.). This role will be responsible for problem solving light maintenance issues with said appliances and the Shelter's HVAC system. The Live In Building Supervisor will work together with our volunteer maintenance men to find a solution to the maintenance concern. If no solution can be made, the Live In Building Supervisor will report to the Shelter or Operations Director, who will call one of our local certified trade professionals to fix the issue. The Live In Building Supervisor will not be expected to solve any or all complex maintenance issues alone.
The Live In Building Supervisor will also perform routine maintenance such as changing the fire alarm batteries, cleaning the dryer lints, running routine cleaning of garbage disposals, ovens, and washing machines, checking and replacing of water heater fuses, etc.
Site Supervision
New Hope will provide a 1-bedroom apartment on site in exchange for this person being home between 8PM and 8AM, 5 nights per week. The Live In Building Supervisor will be available for minor incidents like lockouts or other issues families might have while they get adjusted to life in the shelter. In addition, the Live In Building Supervisor will respond to evening requests for shelter if local police or DCS locate a child sleeping outside who needs to enter shelter. Late evening intakes are a rare, but critical, part of our work to respond to family homelessness. Last, The Live In Building Supervisor will respond to emergencies like crimes or fires by calling first responders and the Shelter Director. We do not require the Live In Building Supervisor to be awake or make rounds, but simply to be present on-site in case of emergency.
