Senior Java Systems Engineer

Responsibilities

  • Learn, maintain and improve existing processes and tools for managing multiple independent instances the Our Company application used for development, bugfix, quality assurance, production, and disaster recovery
  • Automate performance, availability and capacity monitoring of production and development JVMs, with an emphasis on maximizing security, uptime and performance (in that order) with minimal "alert noise"
  • With other members of the technical team, respond to and address operational incidents when they occur.
  • Work closely with other members of the technical operations and development teams to design and implement new software infrastructure
  • Guide and mentor the development team in secure, efficient and systems-aware programming practices

Required skills and experience

  • Five or more years experience configuring, deploying, monitoring and maintaining multiple development and production instances of distributed Java web applications under Linux in a secure high availability environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate complex technical issues in language understandable to both  Java software engineers and network/systems engineers
  • Experience debugging Java infrastructure and application issues and tuning JVM configuration for improved performance and resource management
  • Demonstrated fluency in Java, JMX, common XML configurations (e.g. ) and shell scripting
  • A high-level understanding of all aspects of a modern Java Software-as-a-Service technology stack, including networking, OS, JVM, application server and classpath configuration

Desired skills and experience

  • Experience installing, configuring, and using Apache Geronimo and the Spring application framework with an Oracle database
  • Experience with hosted, highly available, multi-tenant applications
  • A love of clean logs and a hatred of spurious alerts
  • A desire to learn and a willingness to admit ignorance
  • Experience with Groovy, Perl, and/or Tcl

Education

  • BS or MS in Computer Science or closely related field.
