The University of Michigan-Flint (UM-Flint) Physical Therapy Department is seeking applications for a 12-month faculty position as a tenure-track assistant or associate professor with expertise across the Physical Therapy spectrum, with an emphasis on orthopedics and geriatrics. This faculty member will teach in the Professional (entry-level) Doctor of Physical Therapy Program (DPT) and, if appropriate, the PhD in Physical Therapy program. Rank is commensurate with experience and academic credentials. The faculty member will participate in teaching, service, and scholarship in accordance with the College of Health Sciences (CHS) faculty guidelines. This position is a 12-month faculty position with a projected start date of January 2026.
The UM-Flint Physical Therapy Department offers two outstanding programs; the professional DPT program and a PhD in Physical Therapy program. The Physical Therapy Department at UM-Flint prepares accomplished physical therapist practitioners, researchers, and educators through best practices in teaching and learning utilizing high-impact teaching practices including inter-professional education (IPE), high-tech media labs and simulations, and hands-on experiential labs involving patients/clients from a student-led pro bono health service known as HEART( Health Equity, Access, Research, and Training). The Physical Therapy Department has dedicated research space with state-of-the-art equipment. The Department is dedicated to serving our diverse local community. Community engaged learning occurs throughout Flint and Genesee County, including at the student-run pro bono clinic, HEART.
Responsibilities
Teaching
- Provide course instruction based on expertise in physical therapist practice and needs of the Physical Therapy Department
- Maintain contemporary expertise in areas of course content taught through ongoing professional development
- Develop syllabi, learning experiences, and assessments of student learning
- Provide instruction in assigned didactic courses while working closely and collaboratively with other faculty
- Implement individualized learning objectives and engage students in active learning
- Assist with program self-evaluation including periodic and ongoing policy and curriculum review
- Perform other functions in support of the Department as requested by the Director
- Serve as a Chair and/or PhD committee member for students in the PhD Physical Therapy Program
Scholarship
Develop and maintain a scholarly agenda according to the CHS scholarship requirements for Tenure-Track Faculty and accreditation criteria.
Service
All Physical Therapy faculty are expected to provide service to the University, College, Department, profession, and the community. Consistent with the mission of CHS and the University, professional service contributions to the Flint and regional community are particularly encouraged. Engagement in service activities at multiple levels is expected.
Required Qualifications
- Current Physical Therapist licensure within United States jurisdiction, and eligible for licensure in the state of Michigan
- A minimum of a PhD or other academic doctoral degree in a relevant discipline
- Contemporary expertise in Physical Therapy with an emphasis on content expertise in orthopedics and geriatrics
- Three (3) years cumulative clinical practice
- Clinical or academic Physical Therapy teaching experience
- Evidence of capability to develop and implement a scholarly agenda
- Record of involvement in professional activities
To be considered for a Tenure-Track Associate Professor position, the following qualifications are required in addition to those listed above:
- Minimum of five (5) years of combined experience in teaching and research at a four-year institution or comprehensive university
- Must meet all CHS tenure requirements
- Must go through college review process and receive Regental approval
