POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of External Affairs, the Senior Development and Events Manager is a strategic, detail-oriented fundraiser and operator who leads special events, supports corporate sponsorships, manages key development systems, and advances a growing major-gifts portfolio. Serving as deputy to the Director of External Affairs, this role blends relationship-building with execution to deliver high-impact events, strengthen donor pipelines, coordinate grants activity, and elevate donor stewardship and recognition across the organization.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: As needed,the position serves as Deputy Director of External Affairs and contributes to strategy, planning, and team leadership. The position partners with the Finance Department to reconcile donor records and support the annual audit process. Additionally, the position provides regular status reports/updates to the Executive Team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Development Operations & Donor Engagement

· Maintains accurate, timely donor/sponsor records in DonorPerfect, Salesforce, and internal trackers.

  • Produces prompt acknowledgments (including annual tax letters) and leads donors through segmented touchpoints.
  • Supports direct mail, annual appeals, Giving Tuesday, and multi-channel campaigns; prepares lists and segmentation.
  • Generates regular dashboards on donor activity, campaign performance, and sponsorship outreach.
  • Assists with scheduling, briefing materials, and logistics for cultivation and stewardship activities.

Event Strategy, Planning & Execution

  • Leads planning and execution for annual events, including Child Fatality Review Board and Safe Sleep Summit for the Maryland Department of Health - Maternal and Child Health Bureau.
  • Leads planning and execution for fundraising and programmatic events, including the Annual Elijah Cummings Leadership Awards and Dinner and the Annual Crab Feast.
  • Manages logistics, including venue, vendors, run-of-show, volunteer coordination, guest services, and on-site execution.
  • Builds and manages event budgets; ensures cost-effective, mission-aligned delivery.
  • Coordinates cross-functional teams and external partners; oversees post-event acknowledgments, debriefs, and reports of final results.

Major and Planned Gifts

  • Manages a focused portfolio of major-gift prospects, executing cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Uses moves-management tools to deepen relationships and identify upgrades.

Corporate Sponsorships and Fundraising Partnerships

  • Identifies and cultivates corporate sponsors, in-kind donors, and community partners in collaboration with leadership.
  • Prepares proposals, agreements, acknowledgment letters, and recognition materials.
  • Tracks outreach, benefits, deliverables, and renewals via CRM; coordinates with Communications for accurate recognition across signage, social, web, and print.

Grants and Contracts Coordination

  • Conducts targeted prospect research for corporate/foundation opportunities aligned with programs and priorities.
  • Reviews RFPs/RFAs, compile templates and documentation, and maintain a grants calendar (deadlines, reporting).
  • Tracks proposal pipeline, reporting requirements, and follow-up steps; support timely, compliant submissions.
  • Prepares agenda and track items for follow-ups for Grants Team meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA degree in Nonprofit Administration, Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, related field; CFRE or CMP; certification in nonprofit management; or 7 years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in lieu or degree.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of nonprofit fundraising experience with emphasis on individual giving and events; proven success soliciting and closing gifts up to $10,000.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage full cycle of complex events and corporate sponsorships.
  • Familiarity with planned-giving concepts; experience launching and/or growing a legacy program is preferred.
  • Proficiency with DonorPerfect and Salesforce is highly desirable; strong Excel/Google Sheets and reporting skills is required.
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and relationship-building skills are required; impeccable attention to detail and follow-through is needed.
  • Must be able to pass background check.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have access to a private vehicle.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work at a computer for prolonged periods of time; ability to walk or sit for prolonged periods of time during events.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and occasionally in outdoor conditions during events; ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional travel (≤15%) outside of the commuting area may be required.
