WGL is seeking a proactive and energetic Senior Associate Legal Counsel to lead our efforts in regulatory rate case matters within Maryland. This is your chance to be at the forefront of major initiatives, driving innovation and excellence in a dynamic legal environment.
Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel for Regulatory, the Senior Associate Legal Counsel will be responsible for matters before the utility commissions in the greater Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) region, with a specific focus on the Maryland Public Service Commission (MDPSC). The ideal candidate will have significant administrative and civil litigation experience, including practicing before the MDPSC, another public utility commission or FERC, and a proven track record of successfully filing rate cases and other applications that create value for the Company. This person will have the opportunity to serve in a first chair capacity on variety of matters before the public utility commissions.
What You'll Do
- Lead Rate Cases: Manage all aspects of rate cases, including drafting testimony, responding to discovery requests, and preparing motions and briefs.
- Regulatory Representation: Represent WGL in various regulatory proceedings before the MDPSC, including investigatory proceedings and consumer complaints.
- Non-Rate Case Litigation: Address non-rate case matters such as cost recovery issues and the accelerated pipe replacement program.
- Government Proceedings: Draft testimony and comments for MDPSC rule makings and legislation impacting operations.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with various business units to ensure regulatory compliance and develop positions on regulatory issues.
Who You Are
- Experienced: Minimum of 7 years practicing law with a focus on regulatory matters in the energy sector.
- Education: Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active bar membership in at least one jurisdiction (DC, Maryland, or Virginia preferred) with the ability to waive into the DC bar required.
- Regulatory Experience: Significant experience before public utility commissions, ideally in the DMV region, or before FERC.
- Communicator: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey complex legal concepts effectively.
- Proactive: Detail-oriented, energetic, and able to work independently and collaboratively and cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.

We offer a competitive salary range of $163,000.00 to $248,000.00 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
