Surgical Oncologist

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Surgical Oncologist is a board-certified surgeon specializing in the operative management of cancer, including cancer diagnosis, surgical treatment and longitudinal surgical follow-up. At the Cancer Center of South Florida (CCSF), the Surgical Oncologist plays an integral member of the multidisciplinary oncology team, collaborating closely with medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, radiology, radiology, and supportive services to deliver high-quality, patient-centered, evidence-based care. This position requires exceptional surgical expertise, sound clinical judgement, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a commitment to excellence in outcomes, safety and patient experience. In addition to core clinical responsibilities, CCSF Surgical Oncologists are expected to uphold the organization's shared values, actively participate in tumor boards and quality initiatives and contribute to a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement and professional leadership within the oncology care continuum.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Care Excellence & Satisfaction
- Diagnose and surgically manage a wide range of cancer conditions using evidence-based surgical oncology standards of care.
- Develop and implement individualized surgical treatment plans in collaboration with multidisciplinary care teams.
- Perform cancer-related surgical procedures with a focus on safety, quality outcomes, and patient-centered care.
- Provide clear, compassionate communication to patients and families regarding diagnosis, surgical options, risks, benefits, alternatives, and postoperative expectations.
- Maintain high patient satisfaction through professionalism, respect, responsiveness, and service excellence.
- Engage in ongoing communication with patients to support informed consent, shared decision-making, and continuity of care.
Clinical Quality & Efficiency
- Conduct comprehensive preoperative evaluations, order and interpret appropriate diagnostic studies, and determine surgical candidacy.
- Deliver timely, accurate, and complete documentation including operative reports, pathology correlation, and postoperative follow-up notes.
- Maintain current knowledge of advancements in surgical oncology, minimally invasive techniques, and oncologic outcomes, applying best practices to patient care.
- Demonstrate efficiency, reliability, and accountability in managing operative schedules, inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, and follow-up care.
- Promote patient safety through adherence to perioperative protocols, complication prevention, and quality improvement initiatives.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration & Collegiality
- Collaborate closely with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, nursing, and support services to deliver coordinated, comprehensive cancer care.
- Actively participate in tumor boards, case conferences, and multidisciplinary treatment planning discussions.
- Maintain respectful, supportive relationships with colleagues and contribute to a positive, collaborative work culture.
- Share professional expertise constructively and address differences of opinion in a respectful, patient-centered manner.
Community Involvement & Professional Representation
- Represent CCSF through patient, physician, and community outreach initiatives.
- Build and maintain strong referral relationships with community physicians, hospitals, and healthcare partners.
- Participate in CCSF-sponsored initiatives that enhance visibility, trust, and engagement within the community.
Payor Relations & Value-Based Care
- Deliver surgical care aligned with CCSF's quality standards and value-based performance expectations.
- Support accurate documentation and coding to reflect surgical complexity, acuity, and outcomes.
- Collaborate with administrative and clinical teams to optimize efficiency, appropriate utilization, and episode-of-care management, including length of stay and readmission reduction.
- Contribute to positive payor relationships through high-quality outcomes, professionalism, and effective care coordination.
Continuous Learning, Research & Leadership
- Participate in continuing medical education, scientific meetings, and professional development activities to maintain clinical excellence.
- Engage in clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, and protocol development, as applicable.
- Contribute to teaching, presentations, or publications when appropriate to advance the field of surgical oncology.
- Participate in leadership roles within CCSF, professional societies, or community organizations as opportunities arise.
- Research and administrative responsibilities, including associated time commitments, are defined and outlined in the employment agreement.
Proactivity & Practice Engagement
- Demonstrate initiative in addressing clinical, operational, and organizational challenges.
- Actively contributes to improving workflows, surgical processes, patient experience, and team collaboration.
- Participate in committees, quality reviews, accreditation activities, or special projects that support CCSF's mission and strategic goals.
Regulatory & Ethical Compliance
- Comply with all applicable federal and state healthcare laws and regulations, including HIPAA, FCA, AKS, and the Stark Law.
- Adhere to CCSF policies, procedures, and ethical standards.
- Maintain an active, unrestricted medical license and board certification, as required.
- Promote a culture of compliance, professionalism, accountability, and patient safety.
Requirements:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Medical degree (MD or DO) or equivalent from an accredited institution.
- Completion of an accredited surgical oncology fellowship or equivalent advanced oncologic surgical training appropriate for the scope of practice or specialty
CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION:
- Board certification or board eligibility in an oncological surgical specialty through the American Board of Surgery or another ABMS, AOA-recognized certifying board
- Eligibility for and ability to obtain and maintain an active, unrestricted medical license in the State of Florida
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Active Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration, maintained in good standing and consistent with scope of practice

- Ability to manage time and have a high attention to detail.
- Ability to demonstrate leadership, integrity, and compliance with medical, ethical and legal standards.
- Knowledge of using electronic medical record systems (EMR).
