As the Head Coach, you will play a crucial role in shaping the lacrosse program, fostering a positive and competitive environment for student-athletes.  The Head Coach's job goal is to instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategies, and physical training necessary to realize a degree of individual and team success. SUMMARY:

The Head Coach advises, coordinates and supports a staff of assistant coaches in conjunction with the Athletic Director. It is the intention of St. Rose High School that this job description generally guides the Head Coach regarding his/her functions and responsibilities. In performing all functions contained herein, and any other attendant to his/her duties as Head Coach, it is understood that a coach shall exercise common sense, good judgment, and shall perform his/her job responsibilities consistent with the total educational philosophy of St. Rose High School. The Head Coach shall not engage in unsportsmanlike conduct.  Duties include instruction, ability to communicate with students and parents, program management, logistics, and travel as supervised by the Athletic Director.

Examples include, but are not limited to:
A. obscene language or gestures
B. berating officials
C. using physical force
D. throwing objects in anger
E. encouraging intentional violations of the rules
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Head coaching experience at high school level preferred, but not required
  • Min. 3 years of high school assistant coaching experience required
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Be proficient with technology, social media, and marketing
  • Have a minimum of 60 college credits
  • Hold or be able to obtain a Monmouth County substitute certificate
  • In-depth knowledge of the sport's techniques, strategies, and rules.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate student-athletes.
  • Commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive team culture.
 

CERTIFICATION, REGISTRATION OR LICENSURE REQUIRED BY THE JOB:

  • Appropriate certification is required. All coaches / advisors may be required to attend and participate in a parent orientation informational event organized by the school as part of their coaching/advisor obligation for this position. Positions are contingent on enrollment and student needs
  • Coaching experience preferred, but not required.
  • Must be available daily during the sports season.
  • Must be certified in CPR as per NJSIAA Regulations.
  • ALL first-year coaches must be certified in CPR and First Aid as per NJSIAA regulations.
  • Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Principal and Athletic Director may find appropriate and acceptable.
  • The successful candidate for this position must complete the Diocese of Trenton's VIRTUS training and receive Fingerprint/Background Check Clearance before starting work.
 

NJSIAA Coaching Certification and Regulations

 

In addition to State Department of Education Regulations, the following regulations must be adhered to:

 
  1. A person shall be eligible to coach in any interscholastic contest, provided the person satisfies all of the conditions listed below (For the purposes of this section, "coach" shall mean all persons who coach an interscholastic high school athletic team in any way, whether for pay or as a volunteer at the varsity, junior varsity and/or freshman level – ninth grade through twelve grade).
  2. In addition to State Department of Education Regulations, the following regulations must be adhered to:
  3. The person's appointment as coach must be approved by the local educational agency responsible for the member school at which the person coaches.
  4.  All new coaches will have 120 days after being hired to complete the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Course online at  Upon completion, coaches will have sixty (60) days to complete the remaining three (3) components.  A certificate of course completion must be submitted to respective athletic supervisors by June 30th to be eligible to coach at an NJSIAA member school for the subsequent school year.
  5.  All coaches must hold a current certificate in CPR, AED and Basic First Aid.  Online CPR/AED training courses do not satisfy this requirement.
  6. Beginning with the school year all coaches must successfully complete a basic first aid course when renewing or completing CPR/AED certification.
  7. All coaches must have Concussion Awareness training through an on-line course or an in-service program, renewed annually. - NFHS Concussion in Sports Course
  8. All coaches must obtain a "Heat Acclimatization Awareness and Wellness" certificate or its equivalent, renewed annually. - NFHS Heat Illness Prevention
  9. Coaches currently in place, and/or who have experience coaching in an NJSIAA high school prior to the school year, will be exempt from provisions B above.  (While experienced coaches will not be required to adhere to all of the provisions listed above, it is recommended that all coaches complete the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching.)
 

Note:  The above regulations do not apply to the coaches appointed by the school to accompany student athletes to individual events.

 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY

  • SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in computer networking; preparing and maintaining accurate records; using pertinent office software and diagnostic applications; and operating standard office equipment. 
  • KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: digital analog electronics to component levels; LAN/WAN administration; TCP/IP protocols; current generation operating systems; networking standards and practices; training methodologies for technical employees; and safety regulations.
  • ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: setting priorities; being attentive to detail; working with frequent interruptions; working as part of a team; communicating with diverse groups; conveying technical information to non-technical audiences; and meeting deadlines and schedules.
 

RESPONSIBILITY

  • Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization's services.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking, and 20% standing.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:

EVALUATION PROCEDURE:
The Director of Athletics will complete a written evaluation form for each coach at the conclusion of each season. A conference between the coach and Director will be conducted before. This evaluation will be used to determine the status of the coach for the following season. Primary duties of the Head Coach are as follows:
  1. The coach organizes the staff and practices.
  2. The coach communicates with other coaches and Director.
  3. The coach adheres to district and school policies and regulations.
  4. The coach maintains a rapport with parents and community (holds meetings).
  5. The coach supervises student-athletes during practices / games, buses, and locker rooms.
  6. The coach instructs student-athletes in proper care and use of equipment.
  7. The coach demonstrates knowledge of the sport.
  8. The coach presents fundamentals.
  9. The coach prepares student-athletes through appropriate conditioning activities.
  10. The coach demonstrates enthusiasm towards student-athletes and towards his/her sport.
  11. The coach is fair, firm and consistent with the student-athletes.
  12. The coach interacts positively with the staff, administrators, parents and community.
  13. The coach strives to maintain proper skills of the sport.
  14. The coach will maintain proper conduct during the game on and off the field (during the year).
  15. The coach teaches and demonstrates positive sportsmanship.
  16. The coach attends in- and out- of district meetings and clinics, as time and resources permit.
  17. The coach prepares and distributes guidelines and rules for assistant coaches, student-athletes and managers to follow regarding their program/sport.
  18. Oversee the safety conditions of the facility or area in which their assigned sport is conducted. Fill out work orders accordingly for each job to be done.
