We are urgently looking for an experienced accountant to work for our client, a large gas utility located in downtown LA. The role is a hybrid role with 3 days on site. The position begins on November 10th and is contracted until March months). The position is paying a salary of $66500 per year with full benefits including 401k with 4% match and generous medical dental and vision benefits.

As an accountant, you will own core pieces of month-end close, revenue accounting, and regulatory reporting for a gas utility business. You'll reconcile the books, build and explain variances, and translate complex regulatory mechanics into clear numbers and narratives.

Responsibilities

  • Month-end close: Prepare and post journals, perform flux analysis, and deliver timely financial statements.
  • Revenue accounting: Calculate and record unbilled revenue accruals; validate volumetric throughput data; ensure accuracy end-to-end.
  • Reconciliations: Complete and document GL account recs; investigate and resolve discrepancies quickly.
  • Regulatory forecasting & reporting: Partner cross-functionally to forecast regulatory/deferral accounts; prepare monthly/quarterly CPUC filings on revenues and gas throughput.
  • Controls & compliance: Support SOX testing and quarterly certifications; maintain strong documentation and audit trails.
  • Regulatory implementation: Set up and maintain new cost-recovery mechanisms and regulatory accounts per CPUC decisions, resolutions, and advice letters.
  • Ad-hoc requests: Respond to data requests from the CPUC, external auditors, and internal audit with complete, well-sourced analyses.
  • Continuous improvement: Spot process gaps, propose fixes, and help implement better workflows and controls.

Requirements

  • Education/Experience: Bachelor's in Accounting (or equivalent) and 4+ years of accounting experience.
  • Technical: Strong GAAP foundation; hands-on with unbilled revenue, regulatory/deferral accounting, and GL reconciliations. Advanced Excel; experience with major ERP/accounting systems.
  • Communication: Can translate complex technical topics for both technical and non-technical audiences; excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Problem solving: Demonstrated ability to analyze large datasets, frame issues, recommend solutions, and drive resolution.
  • Work style: Detail-oriented, organized, and able to work independently with minimal guidance; comfortable shifting priorities and leaning in during critical deadlines.
  • Integrity & discretion: Maintains confidentiality and sound judgment; SOX/control mindset.

  • Exposure to BI/reporting tools (e.g., Power Query, Power BI, Looker).
