Construction Inspector I – Entry-Level Opportunity

We are seeking an entry-level Transportation Construction Inspector to join our expanding Colorado Springs team. In this role, you will collaborate closely with construction managers and project engineers to observe and inspect transportation construction projects.

Summary:
As a Construction Inspector I, you will support our inspection team by observing and documenting construction work on roadways, bridges, traffic signals, and related infrastructure. This is an excellent opportunity for an entry-level candidate to gain hands-on experience and develop a rewarding career in construction management.
Position Title: Construction Inspector I
Reports to: Project Manager or Inspection Team Lead
Compensation: $26.00 – $32.00 per hour. This is a non-exempt position under the FLSA. The pay range provided is an estimate; the final hourly rate will be determined based on internal equity, established salary ranges, relevant skills, experience, qualifications, and current market conditions.
Requirements
Duties and Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Observe and inspect ongoing construction work under the direction of the Construction Manager or inspection team leads to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and contract documents.
- Maintain accurate daily inspection reports documenting job site activities, including work performed, materials used, and verification of quantities against contractor-submitted reports to identify any impacts to budget or schedule.
- Conduct field measurements to establish quantities for pay item documentation and reconciling with contractors.
- Review third-party materials testing frequency, documentation, and compliance with standards.
- Utilize digital tools (e.g., Excel) to explain pay quantities and variations from plans.
- Coordinate quality assurance (QA) activities with quality control (QC) efforts to ensure that all work meets project specifications, standards and regulatory requirements.
- Assist with utility coordination and potential right-of-way issue resolution as needed.
- Read and interpret roadway, structure, bridge plans and specifications.
- Support senior inspectors to ensure quality and adherence to approved plans.
- Inspect work zones for placement and maintenance of traffic control devices and erosion control measures in accordance with project specifications and safety standards.
- Proactively monitor construction sites to detect and prevent safety, health and environmental hazards, ensuring all activities comply with safety standards and best practices.
- Ensure proper use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) on job sites, including wearing appropriate gear and confirming compliance with safety protocols.
- Promptly report and document unsafe conditions to supervisors or management.
- Demonstrate clear, timely communication with both internal and external stakeholders, utilizing each party's preferred method of communication channel (e.g., phone, email, text).
- Maintain flexibility to work varying shift lengths and schedules, including daytime, nighttime, weekends and occasional travel. Work hours will vary depending on project demands.
- Operate and maintain company-issued equipment, including vehicles, inspection tools and other job site resources, in accordance with safety protocols and maintenance standards.

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; secondary education in engineering or related studies preferred.
- 0–5 years of construction inspection experience, ideally with highway/bridge projects (CDOT, city, or federally funded projects).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, cloud-based file servers, and GIS asset management software.
- Ability to learn quickly, work responsibly, and adapt to changing project needs.
- Willingness to work flexible schedules and travel as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with CDOT and local municipal construction projects.
- Relevant inspection certifications (e.g., Erosion Control, OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety, CDOT Basics, Work Zone Traffic Control).
- Basic understanding of construction principles and practices.
- Experience working on projects with multiple funding sources.
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal project guidelines.
Physical Requirements
- Perform field duties in outdoor environments subject to weather fluctuations, temperature extremes, and proximity to construction materials that may reach high heat levels, such as hot-mix asphalt.
- Capability to walk and inspect construction sites for extended periods.
- Experience regular exposure to loud noise levels.
- Experience frequent exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dust, and other airborne particles that may affect breathing, eyes, or skin.
- Work in close proximity to active roadways, including areas with high-speed traffic.
- Occasional lifting and carrying of equipment or materials up to 50 pounds.
- Maintain endurance for detailed work and computer use.
- Ability to work in both office and field environments.
- Frequent bending and stooping throughout the workday.

- Valid driver's license and ability to work remotely from an equipped vehicle or project field office.
- Willingness to travel to various project sites in the surrounding area.
- Maintain a satisfactory driving record.
