Why FSC?

Family Service Center (FSC) is a growing nonprofit community-based mental health agency that is located in Northfield, Illinois. We serve clients of all ages in the surrounding communities with in-person and telehealth counseling sessions. We offer therapy services in English, Spanish, and Mongolian on a sliding fee scale to minimize barriers of access to service. We also serve our community through outreach and educational programs delivered in partnership with local schools and many other organizations, and interact with parents, educators, older adults, and the community at large. Position Summary

The
Development Strategy and Engagement Specialist
is responsible for leading the development and execution of a comprehensive development strategy to grow and sustain the agency's annual revenue, with a primary focus on cultivating and securing gifts from major donors (corporate, foundations, and individuals). As a senior team member, this role will work closely with the Co-Executive Directors, senior agency leadership, board members, community partners, and existing development team to raise the visibility of the organization and build long-term financial strength.

This is a hands-on role well-suited to someone who thrives in a small team environment and is energized by relationship-building and strategic growth and has a passion for improving mental wellness in our society.

Key Responsibilities:

Development Strategy & Execution

  • Collaborate with the Co-Executive Director to identify funding gaps, opportunities, and donor priorities.
  • Lead on development of comprehensive development/fundraising plan aligned with agency long term strategic plan including optimization of existing staff development roles and responsibilities and updating processes and procedures as necessary.
  • Design and implement annual development and communication plans with timelines and measurable goals. Oversee alignment of agency collateral materials.
  • Establish monitoring metrics and continuous improvement processes.

Major Gifts & Donor Cultivation

  • Lead individual giving and major donor efforts.
  • Develop and execute individual cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Create customized stewardship plans to retain and grow donor relationships.

Development Operations

  • Ensure timely donor communications, including appeals, updates, and reports.
  • Manage and track fundraising metrics for internal and board reporting.

Board & Leadership Engagement

  • Partner with the Co-Executive Director and Board Development Committee on donor stewardship outreach and strategy.
  • Support and train board members in donor engagement and fundraising roles.
  • Provide development updates and dashboards at board meetings.

Qualifications

  • Passion for the mission and commitment to equity and community impact.
  • 7+ years of nonprofit fundraising experience, including strategic plan development and execution, and individual giving and donor stewardship. Past board engagement a plus.
  • Proven track record of agency leadership and securing and growing major gifts.
  • Excellent communication skills—verbal, written, and interpersonal.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, entrepreneurial, resource-conscious environment.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with fundraising CRMs and donor segmentation best-practices.
  • Proficient computer skills required (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • The ability to travel to local events and transport and set up (up to 40+ lbs.)
