Job Overview:

The School Building Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, and safety of the school building and grounds. This role ensures that the school environment is conducive to learning, by managing the maintenance of facilities, supervising custodial staff, and coordinating with contractors, vendors, and other external parties. The Building Manager plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and functionality of the school building.

Key Responsibilities:

Facility Maintenance & Operations:

  • Manage the general upkeep of the school building, classrooms, common areas, restrooms, and outdoor grounds.
  • Supervise the maintenance and repair of school facilities, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and safety equipment.
  • Monitor the school's equipment and furniture inventory, and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed.
  • Ensure that the building and grounds meet health and safety standards and comply with all regulations.
  • Coordinate with external vendors and contractors for major repairs, renovations, or specialized services.

Safety & Security:

  • Ensure the building is secure during non-school hours and maintain an emergency preparedness plan.
  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of security systems, alarms, and surveillance equipment.
  • Respond promptly to emergencies, including fire, flood, or other safety-related incidents.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and drills to ensure compliance with safety protocols.

Supervision & Staff Coordination:

  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of custodial and maintenance staff, ensuring timely and efficient completion of tasks.
  • Train staff on proper cleaning, maintenance procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Develop work schedules and assign responsibilities to ensure that all areas of the building are properly maintained.

Event & Facility Usage:

  • Oversee the preparation and setup of school facilities for events, meetings, or after-hours activities.
  • Ensure that facilities are properly cleaned and set up for special events, conferences, or other school activities.

Budgeting & Resource Management:

  • Manage the building's maintenance and repair budget, tracking expenditures and ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
  • Order supplies, materials, and equipment needed for the upkeep of the building.
  • Monitor energy use and implement cost-saving measures where possible.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate's degree or higher preferred).
  • Proven experience in building management, facilities maintenance, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing) and general maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and manage a team of custodial and maintenance staff.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, building codes, and emergency procedures.
  • Familiarity with budget management and resource allocation.
  • Ability to use basic office software (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Suite).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, bend, kneel, and stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, and in all weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in school or institutional facility management.
  • Certification in building maintenance or facilities management (e.g., FMP, CPM).
