The Program Coordinator supports the daily operation of the SC State 1890 Research and Extension 4-H program. This role involves working closely with staff who deliver the program at the county and regional levels. The Coordinator is responsible for essential administrative coordination, ensuring that program implementation and activities adhere to specified South Carolina State University 1890 Extension departmental objectives, particularly those tied to the 4-H and Youth Development program and USDA-NIFA mandates.

This position coordinates program activities to ensure administrative efficiency and compliance with departmental standards. Work is performed under the direction of the State 4-H Program Lead and is reviewed through conferences, reports, and observation of results.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

  • Program Coordination & Support:
  • Assist the State 4-H Program Leader in developing goals and priorities for the State 4-H management team.
  • Coordinate 4-H agent training with the State Program Leader and other state 4-H staff.
  • Oversee and coordinate the state 4-H calendar.
  • Have program delivery responsibilities in collaboration with Agents and Regional Directors.
  • Ensure the program's efficient and effective daily operations.
  • Develop operating policies and procedures for the program with the State 4-H Program Leader.
  • Confers with agents and essential parties to explain the program and outline individual responsibilities.
  • Data Management & Reporting:
  • Manage data collection and reporting consistent with mandates established by the 1890 Research & Extension Administration.
  • Prepare timely program reports for higher-level supervisors.
  • Assist with the coordination and evaluation of the 1890 Research and Extension program.
  • Governance & Stakeholder Relations:
  • Oversee the advisory board and select volunteers based on relevant knowledge and experience.
  • Maintain liaisons within the Extension system and with appropriate agencies and professional groups.
  • Provide oversight, management, and advocacy for the 4-H team and agents in the field.
  • Professionalism & Initiative:
  • Display consistent initiative by communicating ideas, new processes, and providing timely feedback.
  • Perform all duties with professionalism and a sense of urgency.

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in a related area.
  • 5 – 8 years of relevant work experience with youth.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work without consistent, direct supervision.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations related to the 4-H program.
  • Ability to collect, transform, and report data while meeting strict deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with the public, contractors, business owners, and Constitutional Officers.
  • Ability to confidently recruit and market programs and be a dependable resource for Extension Agents.
  • Valid driver's license is required.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Location: The individual will be located on the South Carolina State University 1890 Research and Extension Complex campus.
  • Schedule: Ability to work a consistent 8:30 am to 5:00 pm work schedule, with frequent evenings and weekends required.
  • Physical Demands: The role requires an employee to regularly sit, talk, hear, and be mobile. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk, and must often lift and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus.
  • Travel: Travel within the region may be required. Overnight in-state and out-of-state travel may be required on occasion.

Special Instructions

This position is federally funded by the Farm Bill (Agriculture Improvement Act) Section 1444, Agricultural Extension Activities at 1890 Land-Grant Institutions. The individual must be able to perform duties and take initiative while receiving minimal supervision, use good judgment in making decisions.
