About Altom Transport

Altom Transport is a third-generation, family-owned commercial trucking carrier specializing in a wide range of commodities including lubricants, hazardous materials, and logistics across multiple divisions including sister companies. We are committed to safety, reliability, and operational excellence. With this in mind, we are seeking a strong Claims Manager who will lead our claims and risk management function to the next level.

Role Overview

As Claims Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing our internal claims handling and risk mitigation efforts. You will manage claims from investigation through resolution, partner with external adjusters, ensure documentation and compliance, analyze trends, and help shape our strategy to reduce loss and manage cost. You will be a key contributor to the company's risk profile and performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the end-to-end claims process (property, casualty, auto/trucking, cargo, bodily injury, etc.) for the company.
  • Act as the primary liaison with insurers, TPAs (third party administrators), adjusters, legal counsel and internal stakeholders.
  • Investigate claims promptly, ensure proper documentation, determine root cause, advise on coverage, subrogation, salvage, and defend/mitigate exposures.
  • Develop, monitor and report on key metrics (e.g., claim frequency, severity, reserves, subrogation recovery rate, litigation trends).
  • Analyze claims data and trends, identify opportunities for loss control, prevention, and improved safety practices.
  • Review and approve reserve and settlement recommendations; ensure adequate and consistent reserves, review payment funding and invoices.
  • Collaborate with operations, safety, human resources, fleet management, insurance and legal teams to align claims strategy with business objectives.
  • Support the insurance renewal process by providing insights on exposure, loss history, and claims trends.
  • Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and best-practice guidelines for claims handling and risk mitigation.
  • Train, mentor and manage any direct claims team or external adjuster relationships to ensure consistent, high-quality service.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory, insurance, and legal requirements.

Requirements

Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management, Insurance, Finance or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of claims management or senior claims handling experience, preferably in the trucking/transportation or logistics industry (or large-fleet environment).
  • Strong understanding of commercial auto liability, cargo / freight claims, bodily injury and property damage exposures in a trucking context.
  • Proven track record of managing claims from investigation through resolution, including negotiation, salvage, subrogation, and litigation oversight.
  • Excellent analytical skills: ability to review claims data, identify trends, develop action plans and present findings to senior leadership.
  • Outstanding communication skills (verbal and written): able to interface with internal stakeholders, adjusters, carriers, legal counsel and leadership.
  • Demonstrated leadership/management ability: ability to set direction, supervise or coordinate teams, drive performance and implement change.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, able to manage a high-volume of claims simultaneously and prioritize effectively under pressure.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to learn claims/analytics systems. Experience with RMIS (Risk Management Information Systems) is a plus.
  • Self-starter, proactive, strategic thinker who embraces continuous improvement and risk mitigation mindset.
  • Knowledge of insurance coverages, policy language, coverage analysis, reserve practices and best practices in claims handling.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel occasionally (to terminals, sites, carriers) as needed.
Preferred / Nice-to-Haves
  • CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter), ARM (Associate in Risk Management) or other insurance/risk related certifications.
  • Experience working in a multi-division or multi-state trucking/transportation environment.
  • Experience managing external service providers (TPAs, adjusters, legal counsel).
  • Hands-on familiarity with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA regulatory frameworks (or willingness to learn).
  • Demonstrated success with subrogation recovery programs or salvage programs in a fleet/transport environment.
