POSITION OVERVIEW
The Suwannee County Sheriff's Office is seeking a highly qualified, detail-oriented, and ethical Finance Director to oversee all fiscal operations of the agency. The Finance Director plays a vital leadership role in facilitating the accuracy, integrity, and transparency of the Sheriff's Office financial management. This position is responsible for developing and managing budgets, financial planning, accounting operations, and compliance with all federal, state, and local fiscal regulations. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, confidentiality, and a strong commitment to public trust in the management of public funds.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Oversees all financial functions including budgeting, payroll, purchasing, accounts payable/receivable, and financial reporting.
· Prepares and presents financial statements, budget reports, and projections to the Sheriff and command staff.
· Develops and monitors the annual operating and capital improvement budgets.
· Ensures compliance with GASB, GAAP, and applicable Florida Statutes.
· Administers and monitors grants and special revenue accounts, ensuring compliance with funding requirements.
· Serves as liaison to external auditors, the County Finance Department, and state or federal funding agencies.
· Utilizes ADG (Administrative Data Group) financial software for accounting and reporting processes.
· Establishes, implements, and maintains financial policies, internal controls, and procedures to safeguard assets.
· Supervises and provides direction to fiscal staff, supporting them in accuracy and professional development.
· Advises the Sheriff and leadership team on financial planning, budgetary impact, and resource allocation.
· Act as the Finance Section Chief in Emergent and Exigent Circumstances.
· Performs other related duties as assigned to support the mission of the Sheriff's Office.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field from an accredited institution.
· Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in governmental accounting, budgeting, or public finance management.
· Software Experience: Proficiency with ADG or similar government financial systems required.
· Certifications: CPA, CPFO, or CGFO preferred.
· Supervisory Experience: Minimum of two (2) years in a supervisory or management capacity preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
· Comprehensive knowledge of public sector accounting, budget development, and financial reporting.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial management tools.
· Familiarity with Florida public sector finance laws, purchasing procedures, and auditing standards.
· Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
· Proven leadership ability and effective team management skills.
· Demonstrated trust, integrity, and ethical judgment in financial decision-making.
· Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information responsibly.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
· Must pass a thorough background investigation.
· Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
· Residency within Suwannee County or nearby area preferred.
· Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required for meetings or emergency operations.
