Job Summary:

The Code Enforcement Officer I plays a key role in ensuring the community adheres to City regulations by conducting field inspections and enforcing residential and commercial ordinances. Working under the guidance of the Code Enforcement Supervisor, this position combines hands-on fieldwork with administrative duties to uphold local laws, fostering a safe and well-maintained environment for all residents and businesses.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • A valid Texas driver's license.

  • Ability to earn Basic Code Enforcement Officer Certification within (6) six months of employment.

  • Two years of verifiable work experience in Customer Service to include the ability to handle difficult and/or irate customers.

  • Experience in code enforcement, plan review, zoning inspections, municipal codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations is preferred.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Ensures compliance with City rules, regulations, and ordinances by conducting field investigations for violations, issuing warnings, notices, and citations, and performing follow-up actions to ensure resolution.
  • Enforces city codes, oversees special projects involving litigation, and serves as liaison with legal staff, appearing in court and hearings as needed.
  • Reviews site plans and conducts zoning inspections for structures such as fences, pools, and enclosures, ensuring adherence to approved plans.
  • Inputs case data into the system, documents violations, remedies, and key dates, and prepares reports and maintains records.
  • Provides educational materials and code explanations to the public and business community, while assisting the Building Official and other agencies with inspections and law enforcement.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Federal, state and local laws relating to code compliance.
  • City practices, policies and procedures.
  • Safety practices and procedures.

Skills in:

  • Handling multiple tasks, planning, and prioritizing effectively.
  • Proficient reading and interpreting municipal codes, legal enforcement procedures, and construction plans for compliance.
  • Conducting experienced level inspections, gathering facts, and making accurate field measurements.
  • Enforcing regulations with tact, sound judgment, and strong customer service.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with business owners, the public, supervisors, and colleagues.

Physical Demands/Work Environment: Work is performed in a standard office environment with low to moderate noise level. May work in outside settings. Subject to sitting for an extended period of time, standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, and lifting and putting away such items as records and office supplies of moderate weight of up to 75 pounds.
