DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Equipment Mechanic I is the entry level class that allows the incumbent to develop journey level knowledge and abilities. Initially, under immediate supervision, incumbents perform the more routine duties assigned to the equipment mechanic series while learning City policies and procedures. As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines. This classification is flexibly staffed with Equipment Mechanic II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher-level class.
Equipment Mechanic II is the journey level classification in the mechanic series in which incumbents are expected to independently perform the full scope of assigned duties. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Senior Equipment Mechanic in that the latter is responsible for performing the more complex assignments and for providing work direction.
The Senior Equipment Mechanic is the lead/advanced journey level classification in the equipment mechanic series in which incumbents independently perform maintenance, fabrication and repair work for the City's public safety, public works, transit and other fleets, equipment, facilities and tools. This class is distinguished from the next lower classification of Equipment Mechanic II in that this class provides lead direction, oversees daily operations, and performs the more complex duties.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Equipment Mechanic I/II: Both positions receive immediate supervision from the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor, Fleet Division Manager, or other management personnel. Also receives lead direction from a Senior Mechanic and/or other assigned staff. Incumbents in this class do not routinely exercise supervision.
