Clinical Research Specialist

The University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing is among the top schools of nursing in National Institute of Health funding. The School contributes to the University's mission to provide high quality education, clinical expertise, and rigorous research. The School of Nursing is seeking a Research Coordinator. This full-time Research Coordinator will be responsible for the conduct of a newly funded, large NIH-funded cancer research project for patients with hematologic malignancies.

Bachelor's Degree in nursing or psychology preferred or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Strong interpersonal and excellent communication required, as individual will be serving as a liaison at study sites and working directly with patients with cancer. Must be able to provide one's own transportation with the understanding that mileage would be reimbursed. Must be dependable and flexible with time to accommodate participant clinical schedules. Comfort with technology is needed (experience with electronic medical records, REDCap, and SPSS is a plus).

This position will work in various clinical environments and may obligate you to meet specific health and safety requirements, including but not limited to screenings, providing proof of vaccination, and/or testing.

Job Summary

Conducts research assessments on study participants. Assists with and adheres to Institutional Review Board (IRB) renewal, modification, and approved protocols. Assists with training staff. Ensures adherence to protocols and corrects issues with data collection.

Essential Functions

The essential functions for this position include:

  1. Day-to-day research operation tasks (e.g., participant screening and recruitment, phone calls, research interviews);

  2. Travel to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and satellite offices, campus locations, and participant homes for subject recruitment, screening, and assessment of patients with blood cancers; and

  3. Data collection, data entry, and data management, including quantitative, qualitative, and biological blood sample processing procedures (e.g., medical record reviews in electronic records; data entry in REDCap and Excel). Handling and transporting of biological blood samples originate from clinic to school of nursing lab.

Physical Effort

Requires ability to visualize computer, laptop, and iPad screens; use keyboard; and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must be able to travel between buildings within UPMC Hillman Cancer Center sites, University of Pittsburgh sites, and primary office in Victoria Building on the Pittsburgh campus.
