THE ROLE:

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer in the Data Platform Engineering Group (DPEG) Mechanical Engineering department, you will be responsible for the mechanical design, technology development, and production support for the AMD Data Center GPU products in this expanding and strategic market for AMD.  In addition, you will also help drive the mechanical design of these products at a chip module, card, system-level, rack, and data center level.  To accomplish this, you will need to interact with other key engineering teams such as silicon design, board engineering, validation, manufacturing and leaders within AMD, our customers, and our partners.

THE PERSON:

The Senior Mechanical Engineer in the DPEG Mechanical Engineering team will have excellent communication skills, planning skills, technical expertise, and critical problem-solving skills. They will be well versed in server and rack as well as data center infrastructure and comfortable in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Senior Mechanical Engineer in the DPEG Mechanical Engineering team will be responsible for assisting in a small, but highly focused global engineering team based in Austin, Texas.  The successful candidate will have a mechanical development background focusing on the integration of silicon devices into products, server development (rack and datacenter level), and cooling designs. They will work as part of a global team in delivering commercially viable products to the marketplace in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Specific pre-silicon work would include mechanical feature definition and design, package technology development, mechanical modeling, tolerance analysis, server level architecture and system development for specific AMD markets.  Post-silicon work includes test planning and execution, characterization, data analysis, and customer/reference system design and characterization.  This role requires considerable use of initiative and independent judgment.

The selected candidate should have the ability to influence and effectively communicate their vision within the team and extended teams. They will be a driver of continuous improvement and new ways of thinking by promoting new ideas/perspectives around mechanical design, and product definition.

The following defines successful performance criteria for the position:

Commercialization– The Senior Mechanical engineer will bring together hardware, product development and manufacturing activities to deliver commercially-viable products/platforms to the marketplace in a timely and cost-effective manner.  The position will engage in engineering work that spans a broad timeline from innovative technology development to productization.Continuous Improvement– The role will be expected to constantly drive process improvements while executing fast time-to-market on products.

The Senior Mechanical Engineer of the Thermal Mechanical Engineering team must have demonstrated the ability for innovation and improvement throughout their career.  Our selected candidate will use their proven engineering skills to ensure the engineering team continuously innovates, uses best practices and adds value for the customers.

Critical Experiences & Competencies for Success:

Technical Leadership Experience - Technical subject matter experience in a large, fast paced environment. Project management of multiple technically diverse programs in parallel is required.Technical Experience - Solid understanding of mechanical design, design for manufacture, and mechanical analysis. Server and server Infrastructure design is desired. The selected candidates should understand and be proficient in the development of mechanical solutions at the silicon, package, and system-level for semi-conductor products; data analysis and characterization, optimization of packaging for increased quality and cost improvement of high-end semiconductor products such as microprocessors.  Mechanical Modelling - Working knowledge of statistical analysis, structural analysis, Finite Element Analysis, and tolerance analysis. Solidworks and Creo CAD experience is required and Ansys knowledge is a plus. Mechanical Testing - Working knowledge of mechanical testing. Fit and function, S&V, EMI, Safety, Instron (force displacement machine), measuring methodologies, Strain gage testing, cycle testing.  The candidate will be comfortable with lab work and be able to work with test teams to support and coordinate this type of testing or be able to do it themselves as needed.  The ability to plan and execute any mechanical testing required is required.Strategic Thinking -   The candidate must be skilled at defining and implementing solutions in a dynamic, high-tech business environment that involves significant uncertainty.Teamwork - Effective collaboration within the team, operations, vendors, and external partners is particularly critical for success.  Leading by example and instilling effective teamwork throughout the organization. 

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

BS in Mechanical Engineering.  Any experience in related fields is advantageous.   An advanced Engineering degree would be an added plus.
