Overview

Optomi, in partnership with a leading healthcare organization undergoing a large-scale Epic implementation and clinical data migration initiative, is seeking an HL7 Integration Engineer / Data Conversion Engineer. This role supports a high-impact, one-time clinical data migration project involving the conversion of data from numerous EMR/EHR systems into Epic. The selected engineer will work within a newly formed data conversion team focused on clinic affiliations, supporting an aggressive timeline and ensuring accurate, seamless data transfer across systems.

Experience of the Right Candidate

The ideal candidate has:

  • Proven hands-on experience with
    Epic data conversions
    , including prior work migrating clinical data from external EMRs/EHRs into Epic.
  • Strong understanding of
    HL7 messaging
    , data mapping, and integration workflows.
  • Experience working with
    SQL
    , data transformation, and ETL processes.
  • Background using
    SSIS
    or comparable data migration tools.
  • Ability to work with homegrown or proprietary tools (knowledge of C# required for operating tools like DeLorean).
  • Experience troubleshooting HL7 interfaces, validating data flows, and resolving integration issues.
  • Technical proficiency in
    C#
    for scripting/light development;
    Python
    experience is a plus.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and analytical skills with the ability to work independently in EST hours.
  • At least
    3–5 years
    of relevant experience supporting healthcare data migrations and integrations.

Responsibilities of the Right Candidate

The chosen engineer will:

  • Lead and support
    HL7 integration and data conversion efforts
    for Epic migrations.
  • Convert, validate, and migrate clinical data (not financial/HR) from various EMR/EHR platforms into Epic.
  • Use internal data conversion tools (such as DeLorean) to extract, cleanse, transform, and load clinical datasets.
  • Work closely with data SMEs and business analysts to understand and execute accurate data mapping.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve HL7 interface issues, ensuring correct data flow and message structure.
  • Document, test, and validate HL7 interfaces and converted datasets to ensure quality and completeness.
  • Support clinic go-lives, reconciliation activities, and post-migration validation efforts.
  • Follow established data conversion standards and contribute to process improvements within the team.
  • Operate effectively in a fast-paced environment with a high volume of clinic conversions and tight deadlines.
