Summary/Objective

The Data Engineer is a hands-on technical contributor responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing data pipelines, integrations, and data products. This role ensures that enterprise data is reliable, accessible, and ready for use in BI dashboards, self-service reporting, and predictive analytics. The Data Engineer partners with BI Engineers, analysts, and stakeholders to translate requirements into robust solutions while fostering a culture of scalability, reusability, and innovation.

Essential Functions

  • Design, build, and maintain our modern data platform using Microsoft Fabric, including Dataflow Gen2, Lakehouse, and data pipelines.
  • Support, enhance, and troubleshoot legacy ETL systems, primarily SSIS packages and related SQL Server jobs, to ensure business continuity.
  • Develop and optimize complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and scripts to integrate and transform data from diverse sources, including Azure SQL and Azure PostgreSQL.
  • Use Python for advanced data manipulation, automation, data quality checks, and transformation tasks within the Fabric environment.
  • Lead the technical effort to translate complex, legacy SQL-based logic from SSIS and stored procedures into modern, efficient Fabric pipelines and data models.
  • Implement and manage data quality checks, monitoring, and alerts. You will be responsible for query performance tuning and ensuring data accuracy, reliability, and freshness.
  • Partner with the BI Engineer to define data requirements, co-design data models, and deliver high-quality, conformed datasets ready for analysis.
  • Champion data engineering best practices, including version control (Git), data governance, and comprehensive documentation.

Competencies

  • Builds and maintains a modern data platform using Microsoft Fabric, while supporting legacy SSIS-based ETL systems.
  • Develops and optimizes complex SQL queries and scripts across relational databases, including SQL Server, Azure SQL, and PostgreSQL.
  • Uses Python for data manipulation, automation, data quality checks, and transformation tasks.
  • Implements data quality monitoring, alerts, and performance tuning to ensure data accuracy and reliability.
  • Partners with BI Engineers and stakeholders to define data requirements and deliver analysis-ready datasets.
  • Designs, builds, and maintains data pipelines and integrations to support analytics and reporting

Required Education and Experience

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in data engineering, ETL development, or a backend-focused data role.
  • 5+ years of advanced-to-expert proficiency with SQL and relational databases (e.g., MS SQL Server, Azure SQL, PostgreSQL).
  • 5+ years developing and maintaining data pipelines, with hands-on experience in SSIS and a modern cloud ETL tool (e.g., Azure Data Factory or Fabric).
  • 3+ years of strong proficiency with Python for data manipulation and automation.
  • Proven experience developing and maintaining data warehouses or lakehouses in a cloud environment (e.g., Azure Synapse, Snowflake, or Fabric).

Preferred Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field.
  • Direct, hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric components (Dataflow Gen2, Pipelines, Lakehouse) is a significant plus.
  • Experience using BI tools like Power BI (to understand the end-user's perspective).
  • Proficiency with Git for collaboration and code management.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps (or similar Agile tools).

Travel

This position requires the ability to conduct business travel as needed; which may include frequent travel outside the local area and overnight.

Work Environment

This job operates primarily in a remote professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
