Literacy Tutor - Middle School

Mt. Pleasant Elementary School District – After-School Literacy Program

Locations: August Boeger Middle School & Ida Jew Academy, San Jose, CA

Program Dates: November 3, 2025 – June 5, 2026

Program OverviewBay Area Tutoring Association (BATA) is seeking dedicated tutors to support middle school students in reading and literacy development as part of the Mt. Pleasant Elementary School District's after-school program.Tutors will implement the Phonics for Reading curriculum to strengthen foundational reading skills, improve comprehension, and build student confidence. Sessions will take place on-site in small-group settings (approximately 3:1 student–tutor ratio).

Schedule

  • Monday–Thursday: 2:15 PM – 4:15 PM
  • Friday: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM (staff meeting via Zoom)

Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging literacy tutoring sessions using the Phonics for Reading curriculum and other ELA resources.
  • Support students in developing reading fluency, vocabulary, and writing skills.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and site coordinators to align instruction.
  • Track student attendance and progress using provided reporting tools.
  • Participate in required training sessions and staff meetings.

Qualifications

  • Prior tutoring, teaching, or literacy support experience preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and reliability.
  • Ability to develop rapport with students and foster a supportive learning environment.
  • Passion for helping students succeed academically.

Requirements

  • Completion of required training sessions (dates to be announced).
  • HR onboarding requirements, including background check and TB clearance.
