About Our Program
Alamance Academy Day serves middle school boys in grades 5 through 8 who face emotional, behavioral, and learning challenges. Our mission is to provide a nurturing therapeutic and academic environment where boys can thrive socially, emotionally, and academically through individualized instruction, emotional support, developmentally appropriate life skills activities, vocational exploration, and enrichment. We are committed to holistic development and believe that every student can succeed with the right academic support, structure, and encouragement.
Position Overview
Key Responsibilities (Under the direct supervision of the Student & Family Counselor):
Individual Counseling
- Conduct weekly one-on-one check-ins with assigned students to address emotional regulation, trauma, behavioral challenges, and social-emotional development.
- Implement individualized counseling plans in collaboration with staff, caregivers, and the student.
Small Group Support
- Facilitate small groups focusing on topics such as anger management, coping skills, peer relationships, conflict resolution, and self-esteem.
- Foster a safe and inclusive group atmosphere that supports participation, reflection, and peer learning.
Family Engagement
- Support family counseling sessions to strengthen communication and family systems.
- Act as a liaison between school and home, aligning goals and strategies.
- Provide education and resources to caregivers regarding mental health needs and supports.
Clinical Documentation & Communication
- Maintain up-to-date clinical documentation, including session notes, treatment plans, and family outreach logs.
- Prepare professional summaries and correspondence for internal and external use while upholding strict confidentiality and ethical standards.
- Collaborate with outside providers and agencies to ensure comprehensive care when appropriate.
Collaboration & Consultation
- Participate in weekly interdisciplinary team meetings to review student progress and refine interventions.
- Consult with school staff on trauma-informed practices and behavior management strategies.
- Contribute to the school's therapeutic culture and promote a safe, predictable, and emotionally responsive environment.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or related mental health field required. (Graduate Degree and Licensure In Progress preferred)
- Experience working with children or adolescents, particularly those with behavioral and emotional needs.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care and family systems work.
- Strong clinical writing and verbal communication skills.
- High level of professionalism, ethical integrity, and discretion.
- Passion for supporting students and families within an educational setting.
