The Compliance Paralegal will provide critical support to the Legal and Compliance Department of a large, mission-driven social services agency serving diverse communities across New York City. This role is ideal for a highly organized, detail-oriented professional with a strong background in legal or compliance work who thrives in a dynamic environment. The Compliance Paralegal will assist in ensuring that internal legal, regulatory, and compliance processes are followed effectively and consistently, and will support a wide range of operational, compliance, and administrative functions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with day-to-day operations of the compliance program, including helping to ensure adherence to internal policies, regulatory requirements, and external reporting obligations.
- Organize and maintain legal and compliance records, including incident documentation, training logs, and policy archives.
- Support HIPAA compliance efforts, including responding to medical records and information requests, tracking access logs, and maintaining related documentation.
- Assist with the documentation and tracking of compliance-related incidents and follow-up actions across a variety of programs and departments.
- Help draft, format, update, and distribute agency policies and procedures in collaboration with legal and compliance leadership.
- Track policy dissemination and assist with staff acknowledgment processes.
- Conduct basic legal and regulatory research to support compliance and risk management activities.
- Provide administrative support for audits, internal reviews, and external monitoring activities.
- Support the department's response to subpoenas, contract reviews, and information requests, as needed.
- Coordinate scheduling, file management, and workflow tracking for the Legal and Compliance Department.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the legal and compliance needs of a growing and diverse nonprofit agency.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a paralegal, compliance specialist, or similar legal/compliance support role.
- Prior experience in healthcare, behavioral health, or human services settings strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of or exposure to HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and general regulatory compliance principles.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with professionalism.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- High proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint); familiarity with compliance management systems or document management software a plus.
- Bachelor's degree required; paralegal certificate or compliance certification (e.g., CCEP, CHPC) a plus.
